13248 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: "And give the relative his right"—the verse—he said: "He began by commanding him with the most binding of rights, and directed him to the best of deeds when he has something, saying: 'And give the relative his right, and the poor, and the wayfarer.' And He taught him how to speak when he has nothing, saying: 'And if you turn away from them, seeking mercy from your Lord which you hope for, then say to them a gentle word'—a good promise, as if it had already been fulfilled, saying: 'It will happen, God willing.' And: 'And do not make your hand chained to your neck'—meaning do not give nothing at all—'nor extend it completely'—meaning do not give everything you have—'so that you will sit blamed'—the one who comes to you afterwards will blame you, and finds nothing with you—'and regretful'—he said: 'He has exhausted you [hasran] who you have already given to.'"

His saying, the Almighty: "And do not squander in the manner of a spendthrift"

13249 - From al-Suddi, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And do not squander in the manner of a spendthrift," he says: "Do not give away all of your wealth."

13250 - From Wahb ibn Munabbih, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: "It is extravagance for a person to clothe themselves, eat, and drink from that which he does not possess, and whatever exceeds what is sufficient is squandering."

His saying, the Almighty: "Seeking mercy from your Lord"

13251 - From Mujahid, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "And if you turn away from them, seeking mercy from your Lord which you hope for," he said: "Waiting for the provision of Allah."

His saying, the Almighty: "Then say to them a gentle word"

13252 - From al-Hasan, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Then say to them a gentle word," he said: "Soft and easy; 'It will happen, if Allah the Almighty wills, so do it,' or 'We shall obtain [wealth], if Allah wills, so do it.'"

13253 - From al-Suddi, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "Then say to them a gentle word," he says: "Say to them: 'Yes, and with honor, but we do not have anything today, and if we receive something, we will acknowledge your right.'"

13254 - From Ibn Zayd, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: "A gentle word," he said: "A beautiful word; 'May Allah provide for us and you,' or 'May Allah bless you.'"
