Volume 7 · Page 235Surah al-Isra (17): Verse 38

Translation · EN

He said: 'Do not walk with pride and arrogance, for that will not make you reach the mountains, nor will your pride and arrogance tear the earth.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'All that is—its evil is ever, in the sight of your Lord, detested.'

13292 - From Abdullah ibn Kathir, may Allah be pleased with him, that he used to recite: 'All that is evil, in the sight of your Lord, is detested'—as a single phrase. He says: 'These things which you have been forbidden, all of it is evil.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'Rejected [madhuran].'

13293 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, regarding His saying: 'Rejected', he said: 'Expelled.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'And has taken from among the angels, females.'

13294 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'And has taken from among the angels, females', he said: 'The Jews used to say: The angels are the daughters of the Truth [Allah].'

And regarding His saying: 'Say, "If there had been with Him, other gods..."'—the verse—he says: 'If there had been with Him other gods, they would have recognized His superiority and His distinction over them, and they would have sought a way to Him; [this implies] they are not as they claim.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'Then they would have sought a way to the Possessor of the Throne.'

13295 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'Then they would have sought a way to the Possessor of the Throne', he said: 'To overthrow His dominion.'

His saying, the Almighty: 'And when you recite the Quran.'

13296 - From Qatadah, may Allah be pleased with him, regarding His saying: 'And when you recite the Quran, We put between you and those who do not believe in the Hereafter a concealed partition', he said: 'The concealed partition means coverings over their hearts, so they would not understand it nor benefit from it. They obeyed Satan, so he overcame them.'

13297 - From Zuhayr ibn Muhammad regarding: 'And when you recite the Quran', he said: 'That is the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; when he recited the Quran to the polytheists in Mecca, they would hear his voice but not see him.'
