13349 - From Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both: "And whoever is blind in the world to what he sees of My power in the creation of the heavens, the earth, the mountains, the seas, the people, the beasts, and things like these, then he is for what I have described to him in the Hereafter—which he has not seen—more blind and more astray in way." He says: Further in argument.
His saying, the Almighty: "And indeed, they were about to tempt you..." [to the end of] the verse.
13350 - From Ibn Abbas, he said: Umayyah ibn Khalaf, Abu Jahl ibn Hisham, and men from Quraysh came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said: "Come, touch our idols, and we will enter into your religion with you." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, found the separation of his people difficult and desired their Islam, so he felt sympathy for them, and Allah revealed: "And indeed, they were about to tempt you..." up to His saying: "...a helper."
13351 - From Sa'id ibn Jubayr, he said: "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, used to touch the [Black] Stone, and they said: 'We will not let you touch it until you touch our idols.' The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: 'What harm is it to me if I did so, while Allah knows my opposition to it?' Then Allah revealed: 'And indeed, they were about to tempt you...' up to His saying: '...a helper.'"
13352 - From Ibn Shihab, he said: When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, would perform Tawaf, the polytheists would say to him: 'Touch, touch our idols so that they will not harm you.' He was about to do so, so Allah revealed: 'And indeed, they were about to tempt you...' the verse.
13353 - From Jubayr ibn Nufayr, may Allah be pleased with him, that Quraysh came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and said to him: 'If you were sent to us, then drive away those who followed you from the dregs of the people and their clients, so that we may be your companions.' He inclined toward them, and Allah revealed to him: 'And indeed, they were about to tempt you...' the verse.
13354 - From Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi, may Allah be pleased with him, he said: Allah revealed 'By the star when it descends,' and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, read to them this verse: 'Have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzza?' Then Satan cast upon his tongue two sentences: 'Those are the exalted cranes, and indeed their intercession is to be hoped for.' The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, read the remainder of the Surah and prostrated. Then Allah revealed: 'And indeed, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed to you...' the verse. He remained in grief and concern until Allah the Almighty revealed: 'And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet...' the verse.

١٣٣٤٩ - عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا وَمَنْ كَانَ في الدُّنْيَا أَعْمَى عما يرى مِنْ قدرتي مِنْ خلق السَّمَاء والأرض والجبال والبحار والناس والدواب وأشباه هَذَا فهو عما وصفت لَهُ في الآخرة ولم يره أَعْمَى وَأَضَلُّ سَبِيلا يَقُولُ: أبعد حجة.
قَوْلهُ تَعَالَى: وَإِنْ كَادُوا ليفتنونك الآية.
١٣٣٥٠ - عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: إِنَّ أمية بن خلف وأبا جهل بن هشام ورجالًا مِنْ قريش أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا: تعال فاستلم آلهتنا وندخل معك في دينك، وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يشتد عليه فراق قَوْمِهِ ويحب إسلامهم فرق لَهُمْ فأنزل الله وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: نَصِيرًا «١» .
١٣٣٥١ - عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ قَالَ: «كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يستلم الحجر فقالوا: لا ندعك تستلمه حتى تستلم آلهتنا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: وما عليّ لو فعلت والله يعلم مني خلافه؟ فأنزل الله وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ إلى قوله: نصيرا «٢» .
١٣٣٥٢ - عن ابْنِ شهاب قَالَ: كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِذَا طاف يَقُولُ لَهُ المشركون: استلم، استلم آلهتنا كي لا تضرك فكاد يفعل، فأنزل الله وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ الآية «٣» .
١٣٣٥٣ - عَنْ جبير بن نفير رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ إِنَّ قريشًا أتو النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فقالوا لَهُ: إِنَّ كنت أرسلت إلينا فاطرد الذين اتبعوك مِنْ سقاط الناس ومواليهم لنكون نحن أصحابك فركن إِلَيْهِمْ فأوحى الله إليه وَإِنْ كادوا ليفتنونك الآية «٤» .
١٣٣٥٤ - عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ كَعْبٍ الْقُرَظِيِّ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: أنزل الله وَالنَّجْمِ إِذَا هَوَى فَقَرَأَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَذِهِ الآية أَفَرَأَيْتُمُ اللاتَ وَالْعُزَّى فألقى عليه الشيطان كلمتين تلك الغرانيق العلى، وإن شفاعتهن لترتجى.
فقرأ النَّبِيّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا بقى مِنَ السُورَة وسجد فأنزل الله وَإِنْ كَادُوا لَيَفْتِنُونَكَ عَنِ الذي أوحينا إليك الآية فَمَا زال مغمومًا مهموما حتى أنزل الله تَعَالَى وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رَسُول وَلا نبي الآية.
