Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 7 · Page 271[Surah al-Kahf (18): Verse 53]

Translation · EN

12857 - From Ibn Umar regarding His saying: "And We will put between them a barrier of destruction (mawbiq)," he said: "It is a deep valley in the Fire, through which Allah separates the people of guidance from the people of misguidance on the Day of Resurrection."

12858 - From Amr al-Bakkali, he said: "The mawbiq that Allah mentioned is a deep-bottomed valley in the Fire through which the people of Islam and everyone else from among mankind are separated on the Day of Resurrection."

12859 - From Ikrimah regarding His saying: "mawbiq," he said: "It is a river in the Fire that flows with fire, and upon its banks are snakes the size of dark mules. When it surges toward them to seize them, they seek relief from it by plunging into the Fire."

His saying: "And they will think that they are going to fall into it."

12860 - From Qatada regarding His saying: "And they will think that they are going to fall into it," he said: "[Meaning] they will know [with certainty]."

His saying: "And man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] argument."

12861 - From Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to him and Fatimah at night and said: "Will you not pray?" I said: "O Messenger of Allah, our souls are in the hand of Allah; if He wills to wake us, He will wake us." He turned away when I said that and did not reply to me with anything. Then I heard him striking his thigh and saying: "And man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] argument."

12862 - From Ibn Zayd regarding His saying: "And man has ever been, most of anything, [prone to] argument," he said: "'Al-Jadal' (argument/disputation) is hostility; it is the hostility of a people toward their prophets and their rejection of what they brought to them. Every mention of 'al-jadal' in the Qur'an is from that aspect—regarding what they dispute with them about in their religion, rejecting what they have brought to them, and Allah knows best."

His saying: "Except that the precedent of the former [peoples] should come to them."

12863 - From Qatada regarding His saying: "Except that the precedent of the former [peoples] should come to them," he said: "[Meaning] the punishment of the former peoples."
