12936 - From 'Umar mawla Ghafrah, he said: Some of the People of the Scripture came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and asked him, saying: "O Abu al-Qasim, what do you say about a man who used to travel across the earth?" He said: "I have no knowledge of him." While they were in that state, they heard a creaking sound in the ceiling, and the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) experienced the intensity of receiving revelation. Then, it was lifted from him, and he recited: "They ask you about Dhu al-Qarnayn..." to the end of the verse. When he mentioned the barrier (al-Sadd), they said: "His report has come to you, O Abu al-Qasim, that is sufficient for you."
12937 - From Abu Hurayrah, he said: The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "I do not know whether Tubba' was cursed or not, and I do not know whether Dhu al-Qarnayn was a prophet or not, and I do not know whether the prescribed punishments (hudud) are expiations for their people or not."
12938 - From al-Ahwas ibn Hakim, from his father, that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was asked about Dhu al-Qarnayn, and he said: "He was a king who traversed the earth with goodness."
12939 - From Ibn Zayd, he said: He was a single warner who reached what was between the East and the West. Dhu al-Qarnayn reached the two barriers and was a warner. I have not heard with certainty that he was a prophet.
Hisham ibn 'Abd al-Malik asked him about Dhu al-Qarnayn: Was he a prophet? He replied: "No, but he was given what he was given due to four qualities he possessed: when he was empowered, he pardoned; when he promised, he fulfilled; when he spoke, he was truthful; and he did not hoard the present for the future."
His saying: "And We gave him from everything a way (sabab)."
12940 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "And We gave him from everything a way," he said: "Knowledge."
His saying: "So he followed a way."
12941 - From Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding His saying: "So he followed a way," he said: "A route."
