Volume 7 · Page 286[Surat al-Kahf (18): Verse 86]

Translation · EN

12942 - From Ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And We gave him from everything a way (sabab)," he said: "Knowledge." From that is the teaching of languages; there was no people he did not know but that he spoke to them in their own tongue.

12943 - From Sa'id ibn Abi Hilal (may Allah be pleased with him), that Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan said to Ka'b al-Ahbar: "Do you say that Dhu al-Qarnayn used to tie his horses at the mountain passes (al-thanaya)?" Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "If you have said that, then Allah has said: 'And We gave him from everything a way.'"

12944 - From Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And We gave him from everything a way," he said: "The locations of the earth and its landmarks."

12945 - From Mujahid (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "So he followed a way," he said: "A location and a path from the East to the West."

12946 - From Ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "So he followed a way," he said: "This refers to the road, as Pharaoh said to Haman: 'Build for me a tower that I may reach the ways (al-asbab)—the ways of the heavens,' meaning the path to the heavens." He said: "A thing may have one name while its meanings are diverse." He recited: "And the ties (al-asbab) will be severed from them," and said: "The ties of their deeds."

His saying: "A spring of murky (hami'ah) water."

12947 - From the path of 'Uthman ibn Abi Hadir, that it was mentioned to Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan read the verse in Surat al-Kahf as: "sets in a hot (hamiyah) spring." Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "I said to Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him): 'We do not read it except as murky (hami'ah).'" Mu'awiyah asked 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr: "How do you read it?" 'Abdullah replied: "As you read it." Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "So I said to Mu'awiyah: 'The Quran was revealed in my house.'" He sent for Ka'b and said to him: "Where do you find the sun sets in the Torah?" Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Ask the people of Arabic, for they are more knowledgeable about it. As for me, I find in the Torah that the sun sets in water and mud"—and he pointed with his hand toward the West.
