Ibn 'Abbas said: I said to Mu'awiyah: "We do not recite it except as a murky (hami'ah) spring." Mu'awiyah asked 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr: "How do you recite it?" 'Abdullah said: "Just as you recited it." Ibn 'Abbas said: "I said to Mu'awiyah: The Quran was revealed in my house." He then sent for Ka'b and said to him: "Where do you find the sun sets in the Torah?" [Ka'b said to him: Ask the people of Arabic, for they are more knowledgeable about it. As for me, I find the sun sets in the Torah] in water and mud, and he pointed with his hand to the West. He reached the Easts and the Wests, seeking the means of a matter from a wise, guided mentor. He saw the setting of the sun at its decline, in a spring of khalab (mud) and thath (black mud) that is harmad (black)."
