- From al-Suddi regarding His saying: "[He] who will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob," he says: "He inherits my prophethood and the prophethood of the family of Jacob."
- From Salih regarding His saying: "And inherit from the family of Jacob," he said: "Prophethood, so that he becomes a prophet just as his father was."
- From al-Dahhak regarding His saying: "And inherit from the family of Jacob," he said: "The Sunnah and knowledge."
- From Muhammad ibn Ka'b, he said: David (peace be upon him) said: "O Lord, grant me a son." A son was born to him, who then rebelled against him. David sent an army to him and said: "If you capture him alive, send me a man whose face shows happiness; but if you kill him, send me a man whose face shows distress." They killed him and sent him a man with a dark face. When David saw him, he knew that [his son] had been killed, so he said: "O Lord, I asked You to grant me a son, and he rebelled against me?!" [Allah] said: "Because you did not make an exception (by saying 'Insha'Allah')." Muhammad ibn Ka'b said: "He did not say as Zechariah said: 'And make him, my Lord, pleasing [to You].'"
His saying: "How will there be for me a boy?"
- From Mujahid, he said: When Zechariah invoked his Lord to grant him a boy, Gabriel (peace be upon him) descended and gave him the good tidings of John (Yahya). Zechariah then said: "How will there be for me a boy?" He informed [the angel] of his advanced age and his wife's barrenness. Gabriel took a dried-up stick and placed it between Zechariah's palms and said: "Rub it between your palms." He did so, and suddenly on its head was a stick between two leaves from which water was dripping. Gabriel said: "Indeed, He who brought forth this foliage from this stick is capable of bringing forth a boy from your loins and from your barren wife."
