- From 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "He said: 'Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture...'" up to the verse, he said: He had ordained—among what He ordained—that I would be as such.
- My father narrated to us, [saying]: Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Ziyad, from Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: Jesus son of Mary had studied the Gospel and mastered it while in his mother's womb, and that is [the meaning of] His saying: "Indeed, I am the servant of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet."
- From Mujahid regarding His saying: "And He has made me blessed wherever I am," he said: A teacher of good.
- From Nawf: "And dutiful to my mother," meaning I have no father.
- From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And He has not made me a wretched tyrant," he says: Disobedient.
- From Sufyan who said: The wretched tyrant is he who readily gives in to anger.
- From al-'Awwam ibn Hawshab who said: You will hardly find a person who is undutiful to his parents except that you will find him to be a wretched tyrant; then he recited: "And dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant."
- From al-Sha'bi who said: The states of the son of Adam are three: the day he is born, the day he dies, and the day he is resurrected; and these are [the states] that Jesus mentioned in His saying: "And peace is on me," up to the end of the verse.
- From Mujahid regarding His saying: "That is Jesus, the son of Mary - the word of truth," he said: Allah (the Mighty and Majestic) is the Truth.
- From Qatadah regarding His saying: "...concerning which they are in dispute," he said: The Children of Israel gathered and brought out four individuals from among them; they brought out their most learned man from every tribe, and they consulted regarding Jesus when he was raised [to heaven]. One of them said: He is Allah, who descended to the earth, so He gave life to whom He gave life and caused to die whom He caused to die, then He ascended to the heaven. They are the Jacobites. The [other] three said: You have lied. Then two of them said to the third: Give your [opinion] regarding him. He said: He is the son of God. They are the Nestorians. The [other] two said: You have lied. Then one of the two said to the other: Give your [opinion] regarding him. He said: He is the third of three: Allah is a god, Jesus is a god, and his mother is a god. They are the Israelites, who are the kings of the Christians. The fourth said: You have lied; he is the servant of Allah, His messenger, and His spirit from His word. They are the Muslims. Each of them had followers based on what he said, so they fought, and [the view of the polytheists] prevailed over the Muslims. That is [the meaning of] His saying: "And they kill those who enjoin justice from among the people." Qatadah said: They are those of whom Allah said: "But the sects differed among themselves." He said: They differed concerning him and became sects. The people differed, and the Muslim person said: I adjure you... do you know that Jesus used to eat food, and that Allah does not eat food? They said: By Allah, yes. He said: Do you know that Jesus used to sleep, and that Allah does not sleep? They said: By Allah, yes. So the Muslims refuted them, and the [other] people slipped away. It was mentioned to us that the Jacobites prevailed on that day, and the Muslims were afflicted. So Allah sent down regarding that [in] the Quran: "So woe to those who disbelieved from the witnessing of a Great Day."
