Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 7 · Page 312[Surah Maryam (19): Verse 38]

Translation · EN

and his mother is a god. They are the Israelites, who are the kings of the Christians. The fourth said: You have lied; he is the servant of Allah, His messenger, and His spirit from His word. They are the Muslims. Each of them had followers based on what he said, so they fought, and [the view of the polytheists] prevailed over the Muslims. That is [the meaning of] His saying: "And they kill those who enjoin justice from among the people." Qatadah said: They are those of whom Allah said: "But the sects differed among themselves." He said: They differed concerning him and became sects. The people differed, and the Muslim person said: I adjure you... do you know that Jesus used to eat food, and that Allah does not eat food? They said: By Allah, yes. He said: Do you know that Jesus used to sleep, and that Allah does not sleep? They said: By Allah, yes. So the Muslims refuted them, and the [other] people slipped away. It was mentioned to us that the Jacobites prevailed on that day, and the Muslims were afflicted. So Allah sent down regarding that [in] the Quran: "So woe to those who disbelieved from the witnessing of a Great Day."

13133 - From Mujahid regarding His saying: "But the sects differed among themselves," he said: They are the People of the Scripture.

13134 - From Ibn 'Abbas regarding "Hear and see" [asmi' bihim wa absir], he says: The disbelievers on that day will say: "How well they hear and see!" yet today they do not hear and do not see.

Regarding His saying: "...the day they come to Us," he said: By Allah, that is the Day of Resurrection; they will hear when hearing will be of no benefit to them, and they will see when seeing will be of no benefit to them.

13135 - From Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) regarding His saying: "And warn them of the Day of Regret," he said: The people of Paradise will be called, so they will look down, and the people of the Fire will be called, so they will look down and observe. It will be said: "Do you recognize this?" They will say: "Yes." Then Death will be brought in the form of a piebald ram. It will be said: "This is Death." It will be brought near and slaughtered. Then it will be said: "O people of Paradise, immortality and no death; and O people of the Fire, immortality and no death." Then he recited: "And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter has been decided."

13136 - From Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding His saying: "And warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter has been decided," he said: When the people of Paradise enter Paradise and the people of the Fire enter the Fire, Death will come in the form of a piebald ram until it stands between Paradise and the Fire. Then a caller will call out: "O people of Paradise, this is Death..."
