- From al-Suddi regarding His saying: "Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them," he says: You abandoned acting upon them. "And thus will you, this Day, be forgotten," he said: In the Fire.
- From Sufyan regarding His saying: "And thus do We recompense him who transgressed," he said: He who associated partners with Allah (1).
- From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Has it not, then, become clear to them," he said: Has it not been made clear to them (2).
- From Qatadah regarding His saying: "Has it not, then, become clear to them," he said: Has it not been made clear to them how many generations We destroyed before them? "They walk among their dwellings," such as 'Ad, Thamud, and those nations who were destroyed. And regarding His saying: "And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been obligatory, and a specified term," he said: This is among the precursors of the speech; he means: If not for a word from your Lord and a specified term, it would have been obligatory (3).
- From al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been obligatory," he said: It would have been taken, or we would have delayed them until the Day of Badr; this is the obligation. Its interpretation is: "And if not for a word that preceded from your Lord, it would have been obligatory, and a specified term," meaning it would have been obligatory, but it is a matter of precedence and postponement in the speech (4).
- From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "It would have been obligatory," he said: Death (5).
- From Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting," he said: It is the prescribed prayer (6).
- From Qatadah regarding His saying: "And exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun," he said: It is the Dawn (Fajr) prayer. "And before its setting," he said: The Afternoon ('Asr) prayer. "And from periods of the night," he said: The Sunset (Maghrib) and Night ('Isha') prayers. "And at the ends of the day," he said: The Noon (Dhuhr) prayer (7).
- From al-Suddi regarding His saying: "And exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting," he said: This was before the prayer was made obligatory (8).
- From Ibn Zayd regarding His saying: "That you might be pleased," he said: It is the reward for what Allah increases for you over that.
- From Abu Rafi' who said: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) hosted a guest, and the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) did not have anything suitable for him. He sent me to a man from the Jews saying: "Sell us or loan us flour until the month of Rajab." The man said: "No, not without a pledge." I went to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and informed him. He said: "By Allah, I am trustworthy in the heavens and trustworthy on the earth; if he had loaned me or sold to me, I would have fulfilled it for him. Go with my iron armor." I had not yet left his presence when this verse was revealed: "And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to categories of them," as if it were consoling him regarding the worldly life.
