[...] and loan us flour until the month of Rajab." The man said: "No, not without a pledge." I went to the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and informed him. He said: "By Allah, I am trustworthy in the heavens and trustworthy on the earth; if he had loaned me or sold to me, I would have fulfilled it for him. Go with my iron armor." I had not yet left his presence when this verse was revealed: "And do not extend your eyes toward that by which We have given enjoyment to categories of them," as if it were consoling him regarding the worldly life (1).

13588 - From Sufyan regarding His saying: "And do not extend your eyes," he said: A consolation to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) (2).

13589 - From Abu Sa'id that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: "Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is what Allah will open up for you of the splendor of the worldly life." They asked: "And what is the splendor of the worldly life, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "The blessings of the earth" (3).

13590 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: "The splendor of the life of this world," he said: The adornment of the life of this world. "That We may test them thereby," he said: That We may try them. "But the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting," he said: Than that which those were given enjoyment of from the splendor of the worldly life (4).

13591 - From al-Suddi regarding His saying: "But the provision of your Lord is better and more lasting," he says: The provision of Paradise (5).

13592 - My father narrated to us, [he said] Ahmad b. Salih narrated to us, [he said] Ibn Wahb narrated to me, Hisham b. Sa'd informed me, from Zayd b. Aslam, from his father, that 'Umar b. al-Khattab used to stay the night with me and Yarfa', and he had a time of the night in which he would pray. Sometimes he would not wake up, and we would say: "He is not waking up tonight as he usually does." But when he would wake up, he would wake them—meaning his family. He said: "And enjoin prayer upon your family and [patiently] adhere to it" (6).

13593 - My father narrated to us, [he said] 'Abd Allah b. Abi Ziyad al-Qatwani narrated to us, [he said] Sayyar narrated to us, [he said] Ja'far narrated to us, from Thabit who said: Whenever the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) would experience a hardship, he would call his family: "O family, pray!" Thabit said: "And the Prophets, when a matter would descend upon them, would flee to prayer" (7).

13594 - From Sa'id b. Jubayr regarding His saying: "And enjoin prayer upon your family," he said: Your people (8).
