Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 7 · Page 49[Surah Yusuf (12): Verse 40]

Translation · EN

Ishaq, from ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, who said: He called them to Allah and to Islam, saying: "O my two companions of the prison, are separate lords better, or Allah, the One, the Prevailing?" Meaning: Is it better that you worship one God, or separate gods that avail you nothing of what you worship besides Him?

11619 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir narrated to us, Qatadah narrated regarding his saying: "Are separate lords better..." to His saying: "...do not know." When the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) knew that one of them would be killed, he called them to their portion and share of their hereafter, and he counseled them.

His saying: "You do not worship besides Him except [mere] names."

11620 - My father narrated to us, Abu Ghassan Malik ibn Isma‘il narrated to us, Sufyan ibn ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from ‘Amr, from ‘Ikrimah, from Ibn ‘Abbas who said: Every [mention of] "authority" (sultan) in the Qur’an is a proof (hujjah). It was also narrated from Abu Malik, ‘Ikrimah, Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, Muhammad ibn Ka‘b, al-Dahhak, al-Suddi, and al-Nadr ibn ‘Arabiyy similarly.

His saying, the Exalted: "The command is for none but Allah; He has commanded that you worship none but Him."

11621 - Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki narrated to us, ‘Abd Allah ibn Abi Ja‘far narrated to us, from his father, from al-Rabi‘, from Abu al-‘Aliyah regarding His saying: "The command is for none but Allah; He has commanded that you worship none but Him," he said: Religion is founded upon sincerity to Allah alone, with no partner unto Him.

His saying, the Exalted: "That is the correct religion."

[The First Aspect]

11622 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr narrated to us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "That is the correct religion," [he said]: "That is the correct judgment (qada')."

And the Second Aspect:

11623 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan ibn Shaqiq narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, from Bukayr ibn Ma‘ruf, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan: "That is the correct religion," he says: "That is the correct reckoning (hisab)."
