His saying, the Exalted: "And he recognized them, while they were ignorant of him."
11730 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yazid al-Muqri' reported to us, Sufyan narrated to us, from Ibn Abi al-Jild, he said: The brothers of Joseph said to Joseph when he said to them, "Indeed, your affair causes me suspicion," while he was watching over them, "as if you are spies." They said: "O 'Aziz, our father is a truthful old man, and we are a truthful people. Indeed, Allah revives hearts with the speech of the prophets, just as the heavy rain of the sky revives the earth." He said to them, while the vessel was in his hand and he was striking it with a strike: "It is as if this informs [me] about you that you are spies."
11731 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani reported to us in what he wrote to me, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "And he recognized them, while they were ignorant of him," he said: They did not recognize him.
11732 - It was mentioned from al-Muqaddami, Azhar narrated to us, from Ibn 'Awn, he said: I said to al-Hasan, "Do you think Joseph recognized his brothers?" He said: "No, by Allah, he did not recognize them until they made themselves known to him."
His saying: "And when he provided them with their provisions."
11733 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: "And when he provided them with their provisions" among those whom he provided for from the people, he loaded one camel for each one of them according to their number.
His saying, the Exalted: "[Joseph] said, 'Bring me a brother of yours from your father.'"
11734 - My father narrated to us, Hisham ibn Khalid narrated to us, Shu'ayb ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Sa'id ibn Abi 'Arubah narrated to us, from Qatadah: "Bring me a brother of yours from your father," meaning: Benjamin, and he is the brother of Joseph from his father and his mother.
11735 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali narrated to us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi, he said: Famine struck the land, and it struck the lands of Jacob in which he was. So he sent his sons to Egypt, and he kept back Benjamin, the brother of Joseph. When they entered upon Joseph, he recognized them while they were ignorant of him. When he looked at them, he took them and brought them into the house, and he brought in the measuring vessel, and he said to them: "Inform me, what is your affair? For I consider your status suspicious." They said: "We are from the outskirts of al-Sham." He said: "Then what brought you here?" They said: "We are coming to purchase food." He said: "You lied. You are spies. How many are you?" They said: "We are ten." He said: "You are ten thousand, each man of you being a commander of a thousand. So inform me of your news?" They said: "We are brothers, the sons of one man, a truthful one, and we were twelve. He used to love a brother of ours, and he would go with us to the wilderness, and he perished there, and he was the most beloved of us to our father." He said: "Then to whom does your father find solace after him?"
