‘Abd al-Razzaq, Ma‘mar narrated to us, from Qatada regarding: "...but enter from different gates." He said: They had been given [striking] features and beauty, so he feared for them the people’s envy.
His saying: "...and I cannot avail you against Allah at all. The decision is only for Allah; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let the reliant rely."
11771 - ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu al-Jamahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir informed us, from Qatada regarding His saying: "...and I cannot avail you against Allah at all. The decision is only for Allah; upon Him I have relied, and upon Him let the reliant rely." He said: The Prophet of Allah feared the people’s envy for his sons, for they were of striking feature and beauty.
His saying, the Exalted: "And when they entered from where their father had commanded them..."
11772 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, Salama narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq who said: Then when they entered upon Yusuf, they said: This is our brother whom you ordered us to bring to you, and we have brought him to you.
His saying, the Exalted: "...except for a need within the soul of Ya‘qub which he fulfilled."
11773 - Hajjaj ibn Hamza narrated to us, Shababa narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "...a need within the soul of Ya‘qub which he fulfilled," meaning: apprehension of the evil eye for his sons.
11774 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salama narrated to us, Salama narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq, regarding His saying: "...except for a need within the soul of Ya‘qub which he fulfilled." And the need that was in the soul of Ya‘qub was what he feared for his sons from the people’s envy, due to their number and their appearance.
His saying, the Mighty and Majestic: "And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge because of what We had taught him."
11775 - ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu al-Jamahir narrated to us, Sa‘id informed us, Qatada narrated to us regarding His saying: "And indeed, he was a possessor of knowledge..." He made it known that the best of knowledge is that which benefits, that the best of guidance is that which is followed, and that the most misguided of misguidance is misguidance after guidance. Only he who has learned it and then acted upon it benefits from knowledge, and he who has learned it and then abandoned it does not benefit from it.
11776 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid narrated to us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ narrated to us, Sa‘id narrated to us, from Qatada regarding His saying: "...because of what We had taught him," i.e., from what We had taught him.

عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ «١» ثنا مَعْمَرٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ: وَادْخُلُوا مِنْ أَبْوَابٍ مُتَفَرِّقَةٍ قَالَ: كَانُوا قَدْ أُوتُوا صُوَرًا، وَجَمَالا، فَخَشِيَ عَلَيْهِمْ أَنْفُسَ النَّاسِ.
قَوْلُهُ: وَمَا أُغْنِي عَنْكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِنِ الْحَكَمُ إِلَّا لله عليه توكلت.
١١٧٧١ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ، أَنْبَأَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: وَمَا أُغْنِي عَنْكُمْ مِنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ شَيْءٍ إِنِ الْحَكَمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ عَلَيْهِ تَوَكَّلْتُ وَعَلَيْهِ فليتوكل الْمُتَوَكِّلُونَ قَالَ: خَشِيَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ أَنْفُسَ النَّاسِ، عَلَى بَنِيهِ وَكَانُوا ذَوِي صُورَةٍ وَجَمَالٍ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: وَلَمَّا دَخَلُوا مِنْ حَيْثُ أَمَرَهُمْ أَبُوهُمْ.
١١٧٧٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ، ثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ: ف لما دَخَلُوا عَلَى يُوسُفَ، قَالُوا: هَذَا أَخُونَا الَّذِي أَمَرْتَنَا أَنْ نَأْتِيَكَ بِهِ، وَقَدْ جِئْنَاكَ بِهِ.
قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: إِلا حَاجَةً فِي نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَاهَا.
١١٧٧٣ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ، عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ «٢»
قَوْلُهُ: حَاجَةً فِي نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَاهَا أَيْ: خِيفَةُ الْعَيْنِ عَلَى بَنِيهِ.
١١٧٧٤ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ، ثنا سَلَمَةُ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ، قَوْلُهُ: إِلا حَاجَةً فِي نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ قَضَاهَا وَالْحَاجَةُ الَّتِي كَانَتْ فِي نَفْسِ يَعْقُوبَ مَا تَخَوَّفَ عَلَى بَنِيهِ مِنْ أَنْفُسِ النَّاسِ لِعِدَّتِهِمْ وَلِهَيْئَتِهِمْ.
قَوْلُهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ وَإِنَّهُ لَذُو عَلِمٍ لِمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ.
١١٧٧٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا أَبُو الْجُمَاهِرِ، أَنْبَأَ سَعِيدٌ، ثنا قَتَادَةُ قَوْلُهُ: وَإِنَّهُ لَذُو عَلِمٍ وَأَعْلَمَهُ أَنَّ خَيْرَ الْعِلْمِ مَا نَفَعَ، وَأَنَّ أَفْضَلَ الْهُدَى مَا اتُّبِعَ وَأَنَّ أَغْوَى الضَّلالَةِ، الضَّلالَةُ بَعْدَ الْهُدَى، وَإِنَّمَا يَنْتَفِعُ بِالْعِلْمِ مَنْ عَلَّمَهُ، ثُمَّ عَمِلَ بِهِ وَلا يَنْتَفِعُ بِهِ مَنْ عَلَّمَهُ ثُمَّ تَرَكَهُ.
١١٧٧٦ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَحْيَى ثنا الْعَبَّاسُ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ، ثنا يَزِيدُ بْنُ زُرَيْعٍ، ثنا سَعِيدٌ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ قَوْلُهُ: لِمَا عَلَّمْنَاهُ أَيْ: مِمَّا عَلَّمْنَاهُ.
