"What, then, shall be its penalty if you are liars?" They said, "Its penalty is that whoever is found in whose baggage it is, he is its penalty," meaning: he is surrendered for it.
His saying, the Exalted: "Thus We reward the wrongdoers."
11817 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, Salama narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq: "Thus We reward the wrongdoers," meaning: Thus we do to whoever steals from us.
His saying: "So he began with their containers before the container of his brother."
11818 - ‘Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Bashir informed us, from Qatada, regarding His saying: "So he began with their containers before the container of his brother." He said: He would not look into any man’s container among them except that he sought forgiveness, as a precaution against the suspicion he cast upon them, until only his brother remained, and he was the youngest of the group. He said: "I do not think he took anything." They said: "Yes, he did." So he cleared him, though they already knew where they had placed their water-carrying vessel, then he extracted it from his brother's container.
11819 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salama narrated to us, Salama narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ishaq: The messenger said to them: "You shall not depart until I search your belongings and fulfill the duty in seeking it." They said: "We do not know it to be with us, nor among us." So he began with their containers, one by one, searching them and looking at what was in them, until he passed to his brother and searched, then extracted it from it. He then took him by the neck and returned with him to Yusuf.
His saying, the Exalted: "Then he extracted it from his brother's container."
11820 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn narrated to us, ‘Amir narrated to us, Asbat narrated to us, from al-Suddi: "So he began with their containers before the container of his brother." When the boy's baggage remained, he said: "This boy would not have taken it." They said: "By Allah, you shall not leave until you look into his baggage, so that you may go and your soul is satisfied." So he put his hand into his baggage and extracted it from his brother's baggage. Allah, the Exalted, says: "Thus did We plan for Yusuf."
His saying: "Thus."
