"And he turned away from them," meaning: He turned away from them, his grief was completed, and his distress reached its limit when his brother joined Yusuf, which stirred his grief for Yusuf again.
11877 - Muhammad ibn al-‘Abbas narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Salamah narrated to us, Abu Zuhayr narrated to us, some of our companions narrated to us from Abu Rawq, he said: When Yusuf detained his brother because of the theft, he said: Ya‘qub wrote to him: "From Ya‘qub ibn Ishaq, son of Ibrahim, the Khalil of Allah, to Yusuf, the ‘Aziz (Mighty Minister) of Pharaoh. To proceed: We are a household upon whom trials are destined. My father, Ibrahim, was cast into the fire, and he remained patient, so Allah made it coolness and peace upon him. My father, Ishaq, was prepared for slaughter for the sake of Allah, and he remained patient, so Allah ransomed him with a great sacrifice. Allah had gifted me the comfort of my eyes, then He snatched him away from me, [severing] my flesh from my bone. So my night is no longer a night, and my day is no longer a day. The captive who is in your hands, for the theft that you have claimed against him, is my son by the same mother. Whenever I would recall my sorrow for him, I would bring him near to me, and he would alleviate some of what I was feeling. It has reached me that you have imprisoned him because of a theft, so release him, for I have not sired a thief, and he is not a thief. Peace [1]."
His saying, the Almighty: "And he said, 'Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf.'"
11878 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Minjab narrated to us, Bishr ibn ‘Umarah informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf," he said: "Oh, my grief over Yusuf." This was also narrated from al-Dahhak and Qatadah.
11879 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah narrated to us, Warqa’ narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid [2] regarding His saying: "Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf," [meaning]: Oh, my anguish.
11880 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn ‘Isa narrated to us, Salamah narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq: "And he said, 'Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf,'" they said: [He said this] in ignorance and injustice.
11881 - ‘Amr al-Awdi narrated to us, Waki‘ narrated to us, from Sufyan, from Sufyan al-Asadi, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, he said: No nation was given what this nation was given: those who, when a calamity befalls them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return." Did you not hear the saying of Ya‘qub: "Oh, my sorrow over Yusuf"? If anyone were to be given it, Ya‘qub would have been given it.
