the ones who spoke about it was the hypocrite 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. He is the one who instigated it and gathered it, and he is the one who took upon himself the greater part thereof among them, [along with] him, Hamnah, Mistah, and Hassan ibn Thabit.

14214 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Munib narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Mu'adh narrated to us, from 'Ubayd, from al-Dahhak, regarding His saying: "and he who took upon himself the greater part thereof," he says: The one who started that.

14215 - Hajjaj narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah narrated to us, [saying]: Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, regarding His saying: "and he who took upon himself the greater part thereof," he is 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul; he started it.

14216 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "and he who took upon himself the greater part thereof," meaning: its enormity, meaning: the one who undertook that sin himself. He is the one with the greatest sin before Allah, the Almighty, the Majestic; they are the ones who will be held accountable for it. If it is a sin committed by the Muslims, then whoever witnessed it and hated it is the one who was absent [in status], and whoever was absent and was pleased [with it] is like the one who witnessed it.

His saying, the Almighty: "among them."

14217 - By the same chain, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "among them," meaning: from the group. He is 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul, the head of the hypocrites; he is the one who said: "I have not cleared myself of her, and she has not cleared herself of me."

His saying: "a torment."

14218 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Minjab narrated to us, [saying]: Bishr informed us, from Abu Rawq, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "a torment," he says: a punishment.

14219 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Malik ibn Zanjawayh narrated to us, [saying]: al-Firyabi narrated to us, from Sufyan, from al-A'mash, from Abu al-Duha, from Masruq, from 'Aisha, that Hassan ibn Thabit came to ask permission to see her. I said: "Do you permit him?" She said: "Has he not suffered a great torment?"—meaning: the loss of his eyesight. He [Hassan] had said:

A chaste, composed woman, never suspected of any impropriety, And she awakes hungry, [having kept away] from the flesh of the heedless.

His saying, the Almighty: "Why then, did not the believers... when you heard it."
