the people regarding 'Aisha?" She said. He said: "Would you do that, O Umm Ayyub?" She said: "No, by Allah." He said: "Then 'Aisha, by Allah, is better than you. This is merely a lie and a false slander."

14226 - My father mentioned, [saying]: 'Ali ibn Muhammad al-Tanafisi narrated to us, [saying]: Ishaq ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Jasr, from al-Hasan, regarding: "Why then, did not the believers, men and women, when you heard it, think well of their own people," as a man thinks when he is alone with his mother.

His saying, the Almighty: "And say: 'This is an obvious lie.'"

14227 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding His saying: "an obvious lie," he says: This slander is a lie. It was narrated from Qatadah similarly.

And by [the same chain] in His saying: "obvious," meaning: a clear lie.

14228 - And by [the same chain] in His saying: "Why then, did they not bring"—meaning: why did they not bring forward for it, meaning for the slander.

His saying, the Almighty: "four witnesses."

14229 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, [saying]: al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, [saying]: Yazid ibn Zuray' narrated to us, [saying]: Sa'id narrated to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Why then, did they not bring four witnesses for it? Since they have not brought witnesses, they are the liars in the sight of Allah." It was mentioned to us that Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah said: "If I were to find a man with my wife, I would not wait for four [witnesses]; I would strike him [with my sword]." When this reached the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, he said: "The sword is sufficient as a witness." Then the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "I fear the drunkard and the jealous one; [it is] not allowed except with four [witnesses]." Then he said to Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah: "'Umar is more jealous than you, and I am more jealous than 'Umar, and Allah is more jealous than me. The extent of Allah's jealousy has reached that He has forbidden immoralities, prohibited them, and established the legal punishments."

His saying: "Since they have not brought witnesses."

14230 - It was mentioned from Muhammad ibn Bashshar, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Ja'far narrated to us, [saying]: Shu'bah narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Salam: I heard al-Sha'bi say regarding a man who says to another: "O adulterer," while he knows that he has committed adultery:

Is the legal punishment [of slander] due upon him? He said: "Yes, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'Since they have not brought witnesses, they are the liars in the sight of Allah.'"

His saying: "they are the liars in the sight of Allah."

14231 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: I narrated to me...
