from the people. Similar things have been reported from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, Mujahid, al-Sha'bi, al-Hasan, Habib ibn Abi Thabit, and al-Dahhak.
- Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "The evil things are for the evil ones"—meaning: evil speech, [such as] the accusation against 'A'ishah and the like.
- al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazyad al-Bayruti informed us by way of recitation, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shabur informed me, [saying]: 'Uthman ibn 'Ata' informed me, from his father, 'Ata' al-Khurasani: "As for 'The evil things are for the evil ones,' [they are] evil deeds and evil speech for the evil ones among the people." Similar [interpretation] has been reported from Qatadah.
- Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah narrated to us, [saying]: Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, [regarding] His saying: "The evil things are for the evil ones, and the evil ones are for the evil things; and the good things are for the good ones, and the good ones are for the good things"—[it refers to] evil speech; the good is for the believers, and the evil is for the disbelievers. That is because whatever word the disbelievers speak that is good, it belongs to the believers, and whatever word the believers speak that is evil, it belongs to the disbelievers.
- Muhammad ibn Muslim narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd al-Salam ibn Harb narrated to us, from Yazid ibn 'Abd al-Rahman, from al-Hakam, from Yahya ibn al-Jazzar, who said: Asir ibn Jabir came to 'Abd Allah [ibn Mas'ud] and said: "I heard al-Walid ibn 'Uqbah today speak words that pleased me." 'Abd Allah said: "Indeed, in the heart of the believing man, there is a good word that circulates in his chest until he utters it, and a man near him who possesses its like hears it and draws it to himself. And indeed, in the heart of the immoral man, there is a word that is not good that circulates in his heart and does not settle until he spits it out, and the man near him who possesses its like hears it and draws it to himself." Then 'Abd Allah recited: "The evil things are for the evil ones, and the evil ones are for the evil things; and the good things are for the good ones, and the good ones are for the good things."
