meet his companion without greeting him, saying: "May you be greeted in the morning and may you be greeted in the evening," and that was the greeting of the people among themselves. One of them would go to his companion and would not ask for permission, but rather would barge in and say: "I have entered," and that would be difficult for the man, as he might be with his wife. Allah changed all of that with modesty and chastity, and He made it pure and free from uncleanness, filth, and dirt, saying: "Do not enter houses other than your own until you seek intimacy and greet their people" (1).
His saying: "Until you seek intimacy (tasta'nisu)."
14343 - Ahmad ibn Sinan al-Wasiti narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd Allah ibn Numayr narrated to us, [saying]: al-A'mash narrated to us, from 'Amr ibn Murrah, from Abu 'Ubaydah, who said: When 'Abd Allah entered a house, he would seek intimacy, greet, and raise his voice.
14344 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Salih narrated to us, [saying]: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Do not enter houses other than your own until you seek intimacy"—he says: Until you seek permission.
14345 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hisinjani narrated to us, [saying]: Musaddad narrated to us, [saying]: Abu 'Awanah narrated to us, from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Until you seek intimacy"—he said: It is, as I believe, among that which the scribes made a mistake in; seeking intimacy (al-isti'nas) is [actually] seeking permission (al-isti'dhan).
14346 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah narrated to us, [saying]: Warqa' narrated to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "Until you seek intimacy"—[he said]: Clear your throats, cough [to make your presence known] (2).
14347 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abdah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn al-Mubarak informed us, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Yasar informed us, from Qatadah regarding "Until you seek intimacy"—he said: It is seeking permission three times; whoever is not granted permission, let him return. As for the first, the living [person inside] hears; as for the second, they take their precautions; and as for the third, if they wish, they give permission, and if they wish, they turn [the person] away. Do not sit at the door of people who have turned you away from their door, for people have needs and they have occupations, and Allah is more deserving of excuses.

لَقِيَ صَاحِبَهُ لَا يُسَلِّمُ عَلَيْهِ يَقُولُ: حُيِّيتَ صَبَاحًا وَحُيِّيتَ مَسَاءً، وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ تَحِيَّةَ الْقَوْمِ بَيْنَهُمْ، كَانَ أَحَدُهُمْ يَنْطَلِقُ إِلَى صَاحِبِهِ فَلا يَسْتَأْذِنُ حَتَّى يَقْتَحِمَ وَيَقُولَ: قَدْ دَخَلْتُ فَيَشُقُّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى الرَّجُلِ وَلَعَلَّهُ يَكُونُ مَعَ أَهْلِهِ، فَغَيَّرَ اللَّهُ ذَلِكَ كُلَّهُ فِي سِتْرٍ وَعِفَّةٍ، وَجَعَلَهُ نَقِيًّا نَزِهًا مِنَ الدَّنَسِ وَالْقَذَرِ وَالدَّرَنِ، فَقَالَ: لَا تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ بُيُوتِكُمْ حَتَّى تَسْتَأْنِسُوا وَتُسَلِّمُوا عَلَى أَهْلِهَا «١» .
قوله: حَتَّى تَسْتَأْنِسُوا.
١٤٣٤٣ - حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سِنَانٍ الْوَاسِطِيُّ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ نُمَيْرٍ، ثنا الأَعْمَشُ عَنْ عَمْرِو بْنِ مُرَّةَ عَنْ أَبِي عُبَيْدَةَ قَالَ: كَانَ عَبْدُ اللَّهِ إِذَا دَخَلَ الدَّارَ اسْتَأْنَسَ سَلَّمَ وَرَفَعَ صَوْتَهُ.
١٤٣٤٤ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أَبُو صَالِحٍ، حَدَّثَنِي مُعَاوِيَةُ بْنُ صَالِحٍ عَنْ عَلِيِّ ابْنِ أَبِي طَلْحَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ: لَا تَدْخُلُوا بُيُوتًا غَيْرَ بُيُوتِكُمْ حَتَّى تَسْتَأْنِسُوا يَقُولُ:
حَتَّى تَسْتَأْذِنُوا.
١٤٣٤٥ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ قَوْلَهُ: حَتَّى تَسْتَأْنِسُوا قَالَ: هُوَ فِيمَا أَحْسَبُ مِمَّا أَخْطَأَتْ بِهِ الْكُتَّابُ، الاسْتِئْنَاسُ: الاسْتِئْذَانُ.
١٤٣٤٦ - حَدَّثَنَا حَجَّاجُ بْنُ حَمْزَةَ، ثنا شَبَابَةُ، ثنا وَرْقَاءُ عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي نَجِيحٍ عَنْ مُجَاهِدٍ «٢»
قوله: تَسْتَأْنِسُوا تَنَحْنَحُوا تَنَخَّمُوا.
١٤٣٤٧ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا عَبْدَةُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، أَنْبَأَ ابْنُ الْمُبَارَكِ أنبأ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ يَسَارٍ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ حَتَّى تَسْتَأْنِسُوا قَالَ: هُوَ الاسْتِئْذَانُ ثَلاثًا مَنْ لَمْ يُؤْذَنْ لَهُ فَلْيَرْجِعْ، أَمَّا الأُولَى فَيَسْمَعُ الْحَيُّ، وَأَمَّا الثَّانِيَةُ: فَيَأْخُذُوا حِذْرَهُمْ، وَأَمَّا الثَّالِثَةُ فَإِنْ شَاءُوا أَذِنُوا وَإِنْ شَاءُوا رَدُّوا، وَلا تَقْعُدُوا عَلَى بَابِ قَوْمٍ رَدُّوكُمْ عَنْ بَابِهِمْ، فَإِنَّ لِلنَّاسِ حاجات ولهم أشغال والله أولى بالعذر
