14348 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd al-Rahim (1) ibn Sulayman narrated to us, from Wasil ibn al-Sa'ib, [who said]: Abu Surah, the nephew of Abu Ayyub, narrated to me, from Abu Ayyub, who said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, this is the greeting (salam), so what is the seeking of intimacy (isti'nas)?" He replied, "A man says a tasbihah (saying Subhan Allah), a takbirah (saying Allahu Akbar), and a tahmidah (saying Alhamdu lillah), and clears his throat, so he alerts the people of the house."
14349 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "Until you seek intimacy"—he means: before seeking permission.
His saying, the Exalted: "And greet their people."
14350 - And by the same chain, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding His saying: "Until you seek intimacy and greet their people," [he said]: There is a precedence [in order] in it, meaning: until you greet and then seek permission, for the greeting is before the seeking of permission.
14351 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Abi 'Umar narrated to us, [saying]: Sufyan narrated to us, from 'Amr, from 'Ikrimah, regarding His saying: "Until you seek intimacy and greet their people," he said: If you enter a house in which there is no one, then say: "Peace be upon us from our Lord, peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah."
I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl, [who said]: Muhammad ibn 'Ali narrated to us, [who said]: Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, [who said]: Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, regarding His saying: "Until you seek intimacy and greet their people," [he said]: There is a precedence [in order] in it; He ordered them to start by greeting, then to seek permission, so that the people of the house may take their precautions. If he is given permission, he enters; and if he is told to return, he returns.
His saying: "That is better for you."
14352 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "That"—meaning: the seeking of permission and the greeting—"is better for you," meaning: better than entering without permission, that you might not sin and the people of the house might take their precautions.
His saying: "That you may remember."
14353 - By the same chain, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "That you may remember," meaning: the seeking of permission and the greeting is better for you, so that you may enter it as Allah has ordered you.
(1). Ibn Kathir said: This is a gharib (singular) hadith, 6/41, and he mentioned 'Abd al-Rahman instead of 'Abd al-Rahim ibn Sulayman.
