And the third interpretation:
14402 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn Yaman informed us, from Hammad ibn Salamah, from Umm Shabib, from 'Aishah, regarding: "And not expose their adornment except what is apparent of it," [she] said: The fatah (singular: fatah), which are silver rings worn on the toes.
14403 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah narrated to us, [who said]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, from 'Ata', from Ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And not expose their adornment except what is apparent of it," [he] means: the face and the two hands. The adornment of the face is kohl, and the adornment of the hands is dye (khidab). It is not lawful for a stranger to see anything of her other than that.
His saying: "And let them strike."
14404 - Through him, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "And let them strike," [he] means: And let them draw [them] tight.
The saying of the Exalted: "With their head coverings over their chests."
14405 - Ibrahim ibn Malik narrated to us, [saying]: al-Hasan ibn al-Rabi' narrated to us, [who said]: Dawud ibn 'Abd al-Rahman narrated to us, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Uthman, from Safiyyah bint Shaybah, from 'Aishah, who said: When [the verse] was revealed: "And let them strike with their head coverings over their chests," men of the Ansar went back to their women reciting it to them. Each woman among them stood up to her waist-wrapper (mirṭ), tore a piece from it, and covered her head with it. The next morning, it was as if crows were upon their heads.
14406 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Ahmad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Yunus narrated to us, [who said]: al-Zanji ibn Khalid narrated to me, [who said]: 'Abd Allah ibn 'Uthman ibn Khuthaym narrated to me, from Safiyyah bint Shaybah, who said: While we were with 'Aishah, she mentioned the women of Quraysh and their virtue. 'Aishah said: "The women of Quraysh certainly have virtue, but by Allah, I have never seen better women than the women of the Ansar, nor any more strongly affirming of the Book of Allah or more believing in the revelation. When the Surah al-Nur was revealed: 'And let them strike with their head coverings over their chests,' their men went back to them, reciting to them what was revealed therein. Each man would recite to his wife, his daughter, his sister, and every relative of his. There was not a woman among them but that she stood up to her patterned waist-wrapper (mirṭ), and wrapped herself with it in affirmation and belief in what Allah had revealed from His Book. They awoke the next morning praying the dawn prayer behind the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, wrapped [in their garments], as if crows were upon their heads."
