Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 8 · Page 148His saying: 'And whoever compels them.'

Translation · EN

Ata' narrated to me from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding Allah's saying: "to seek the enjoyment of the worldly life," meaning their earnings and their children from adultery. A similar account has been reported from Muqatil ibn Hayyan.

His saying: "And whoever forces them."

14534 - Through the same chain [as above] from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "And whoever forces them," meaning: whoever forces his slave girl to commit adultery.

His saying: "Indeed, Allah is, after their forcing [them]."

14535 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Musaddad reported, [saying]: Yahya ibn Sa'id reported from al-A'mash, from Abu Sufyan, from Jabir regarding Allah's saying: "And do not force your slave girls to prostitution," [to the end of] the verse, he said: There was a slave girl for 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul called Musaykah, and he used to force her to commit adultery. So Allah revealed: "And do not force your slave girls to prostitution if they desire chastity, to seek the enjoyment of the worldly life. And whoever forces them, indeed Allah is, after their forcing them, Forgiving and Merciful," and this is how he used to read it.

14536 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, [saying]: Yahya reported, [saying]: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, [saying]: 'Ata' narrated to me from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Indeed Allah is, after their forcing them, Forgiving and Merciful," he said: In the recitation of Ibn Mas'ud: "[for them] Forgiving and Merciful, and there is no sin upon them."

His saying: "Forgiving, Merciful."

14537 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Salih reported, [saying]: Mu'awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me from 'Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "And whoever forces them, indeed Allah is, after their forcing them, Forgiving and Merciful," he says: Do not force your slave girls to commit adultery, for if you do, then Allah, Glory be to Him, is for them Forgiving and Merciful, and their sin is upon the one who forced them.

14538 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah reported, [saying]: Warqa' reported from Ibn Abi Najih from Mujahid regarding His saying: "Indeed Allah is, after their forcing them, Forgiving and Merciful," he said: [This is] for those forced into adultery; it was regarding this that this verse was revealed.

14539 - Al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid ibn Mazid informed us, [saying]: Muhammad ibn Shu'ayb ibn Shapur informed me.
