13687 - Through the path of Hammad ibn Salamah, from Humayd al-Tawil: When Iyas ibn Mu'awiyah was appointed judge, al-Hasan came to him and saw him sad, so Iyas wept. He said: "What makes you weep?" He replied: "O Abu Sa'id, it has reached me that judges are three: a man who exercised ijtihad (legal reasoning) and erred, so he is in the Fire; a man who was swayed by desire, so he is in the Fire; and a man who exercised ijtihad and was correct, so he is in Paradise." Al-Hasan said: "Indeed, in what Allah recounted of the tidings of David is that which refutes that." Then he recited: "Allah took upon the rulers three [covenants]: that they do not sell His verses for a small price, nor follow desire, nor fear the people." Then he recited this verse: "O David, indeed We have made you a successor upon the earth..." (the verse), and said: "So do not fear the people, but fear Me," and said: "And do not sell My verses for a small price."
The Statement of the Exalted: "And We subjected with David the mountains, exalting [Allah], and the birds."
13688 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: "And We subjected with David the mountains, exalting [Allah], and the birds," he said: "They would perform prayer with David when he prayed. 'And We taught him the making of garments for you,' he said: They were plates, and the first to extend and link them was David (peace be upon him)."
13689 - Reported from Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, from Abu Sinan, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, he said: Six hundred thousand chairs would be set for Solomon, so the believers of mankind would sit near him, then the believers of the jinn would sit behind them, then he would command the birds so they would shade them, then he would command the wind so it would carry him (may Allah bless him and grant him peace).
The Statement of the Exalted: "And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind, blowing fiercely, proceeding by his command..."
13690 - From Abdullah ibn 'Ubayd ibn 'Umayr, he said: Solomon would command the wind and it would gather like a great mountain, then he would order his bed to be placed on the highest part of it, then he would call for a horse from those with wings, and it would ascend until it climbed onto his bed. Then he would command the wind and it would rise with him to every high place below the sky; he would lower his head, not looking to the right or left, out of glorification of Allah and gratitude for what he knew of the insignificance of what he was in within the dominion of Allah; the wind would place him wherever he wished it to place him.
13691 - From Qatadah regarding His saying: "And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind..." (the verse), he said: Allah made Solomon the heir of David, so he inherited his prophethood and his kingdom, and He increased him over that by subjecting the winds and the devils to him.
