nor of the West. He said: It is in a place among trees where the shadow of its fruit is seen upon its leaves; and this [kind] of tree, the sun does not rise over it, nor does it set.
14598 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, [saying]: Musaddad reported, [saying]: Abu 'Awanah reported from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding His saying: "Olive, neither of the East nor of the West," he said: It is in the midst of trees, not struck by the sun from the East nor the West.
The second interpretation:
14599 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Sa'd reported, [saying]: 'Amr ibn Abi Qays reported from Simak ibn Harb, from 'Ikrimah, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Olive, neither of the East nor of the West," he said: A tree in the open desert, not shaded by trees, nor mountains, nor caves, and nothing obscures it; that is best for its oil.
14600 - Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani narrated to me, [saying]: Hafs ibn 'Umar reported, [saying]: al-Hakam ibn Aban reported from 'Ikrimah regarding the saying of the Exalted: "Olive, neither of the East nor of the West," he said: It grows in a wilderness of the earth, not shaded by a mountain, nor trees, nor buildings, nor anything from what Allah has created.
14601 - My father narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Nu'aym reported, [saying]: 'Amr ibn Farrukh reported from Habib ibn al-Zubayr, from 'Ikrimah: A man asked him about "Olive, neither of the East nor of the West," and he said: That is an olive tree in an open land; when the sun rises, it rises upon it, and when it sets, it sets upon it; that is the purest [oil] there can be.
14602 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hisinjani narrated to us, [saying]: Musaddad reported, [saying]: Yahya reported from 'Imran ibn Hudayr, from 'Ikrimah regarding His saying: "Olive, neither of the East nor of the West," he said: It is fully exposed, and that is purer for its oil, better, and more hardy. Do you not see the wild animals, how hardy they are? So too is this tree.
The third interpretation:
14603 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar ibn al-Harith narrated to us, [saying]: 'Abd al-Rahman al-Dashtaki reported, [saying]: 'Amr ibn Abi Qays reported from 'Ata', from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "Neither of the East nor of the West," [he said]: It is not eastern, for there is no west in it, and it is not western, for there is no east in it; rather, it is eastern and western.
وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ
قَالَ: هِيَ فِي مَوْضِعٍ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ يُرَى ظِلُّ ثَمَرِهَا فِي وَرَقِهَا، وَهَذِهِ مِنَ الشَّجَرِ لَا تَطْلُعُ عَلَيْهَا الشَّمْسُ وَلا تَغْرُبُ.
١٤٥٩٨ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ عَنْ أَبِي بِشْرٍ عَنِ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: زَيْتُونَةٍ لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ قَالَ: هِيَ وَسَطُ الشَّجَرِ لَا يُصِيبُهَا الشَّمْسُ شَرْقًا وَلَا غَرْبًا.
وَالْوَجْهُ الثَّانِي:
١٤٥٩٩ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمَّارٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ، أَنْبَأَ عَمْرُو بْنُ أَبِي قَيْسٍ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ قَالَ: شَجَرَةٌ بِالصَّحَرَاءِ لَا يُظِلُّهَا شَجَرٌ وَلا جَبَلٌ وَلا كَهْفٌ وَلا يُوَارِيهَا شَيْءٌ هُوَ أَجْوَدُ لِزَيْتِهَا.
١٤٦٠٠ - حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَمَّادٍ الطِّهْرَانِيُّ، أَنْبَأَ حَفْصُ بْنُ عُمَرَ، ثنا الْحَكَمُ ابن أَبَانَ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى: زَيْتُونَةٍ لا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ قَالَ: نَبْتٌ فِي فَلاةٍ مِنَ الأَرْضِ لَا يُظِلُّهَا جَبَلٌ وَلا شَجَرٌ وَلا بُنْيَانٌ وَلا شَيْءٌ مِمَّا خَلَقَ اللَّهُ.
١٤٦٠١ - حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي، ثنا أبو نعيم، ثنا عمرو بْنُ فَرُّوخَ، عَنْ حَبِيبِ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، سَأَلَهُ رَجُلٌ عَنْ زَيْتُونَةٍ لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ فَقَالَ: تِلْكَ زَيْتُونَةٌ بِأَرْضٍ فَلاةٍ، إِذَا أَشْرَقَتِ الشَّمْسُ أَشْرَقَتْ عَلَيْهَا، وَإِذَا غَرَبَتْ غَرَبَتْ عَلَيْهَا، فَذَاكَ أَصْفَى مَا يَكُونُ مِنَ الزَّيْتِ.
١٤٦٠٢ - حَدَّثَنَا عَلِيُّ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ الْهِسِنْجَانِيُّ، ثنا مُسَدَّدٌ، ثنا يحي عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُدَيْرٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ فِي قَوْلِهِ: زَيْتُونَةٍ لا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ قَالَ: هي مصرحة، وَذَلِكَ أَصْفَى لِزَيْتِهَا وَأَجْوَدُ وَأَجْلَدُ، أَلَمْ تَرَوْا إِلَى الْوَحْشِ مَا أَجْلَدَهَا؟ فَكَذَلِكَ هَذِهِ الشَّجَرَةُ.
الْوَجْهُ الثَّالِثُ:
١٤٦٠٣ - حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَمَّارِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ، ثنا عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ الدَّشْتَكِيُّ، ثنا عَمْرُو ابن أَبِي قَيْسٍ عَنْ عَطَاءٍ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ فِي قَوْلِهِ: لَا شَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ لَيْسَتْ بِشَرْقِيَّةٍ وَلَيْسَ فِيهَا غَرْبٌ وَلا غَرْبِيَّةٍ لَيْسَ فِيهَا شَرْقٌ وَلَكِنَّهَا شَرْقِيَّةٌ غَرْبِيَّةٌ.
