and Yusuf ibn Waqid, [all of whom] said: Ya'qub reported to us from Ja'far. Abu al-Rabi' said: Ja'far reported to us from Shimr ibn 'Atiyyah, [who] said: Ibn 'Abbas came to Ka'b al-Ahbar and said: Narrate to me about the saying of Allah: "Its oil would almost glow, and even if fire had not touched it," he said: Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, almost clarifies [the truth] to the people, even if he did not speak, [in the sense] that he is a Prophet, just as that oil almost glows.
His saying: "Light upon light."
14619 - Muhammad ibn 'Ammar ibn al-Harith narrated to us, from 'Ubayd Allah ibn Musa, [who] informed us: Abu Ja'far reported from al-Rabi' ibn Anas, from Abu al-'Aliyah, from Ubayy ibn Ka'b regarding this verse: "Light upon light," [he said]: He fluctuates through five [types] of light: His speech is light, his deed is light, his entrance is light, his exit is light, and his destination is light on the Day of Resurrection, [leading] to Paradise.
14620 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd ibn 'Atiyyah al-'Awfi informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: My father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Light upon light," he means by that the believer's faith and his deed.
14621 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [saying]: al-Husayn ibn 'Ali reported to us, [saying]: 'Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, [saying]: Asbat reported to us from al-Suddi regarding "Light upon light," he said: The light of the oil and the light of the fire, when they joined, they illuminated; and one does not illuminate without the other. Likewise, the light of the Quran and the light of faith, when they joined, neither one of them exists except with the other.
14622 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah reported to us, [saying]: Warqa' reported to us from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid: "Light upon light," [means] the fire [placed] upon the oil [as] it is adjacent to it.
14623 - Musa ibn Harun ibn Musa al-Tusi informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: al-Husayn ibn Muhammad al-Marwazi reported to us, [saying]: Shayban reported to us from Qatadah: "Light upon light," this is a parable Allah struck for the Quran, saying: A light and guidance from Me have come, one [layer] upon another.
His saying, the Exalted: "Allah guides to His light whom He wills."
14624 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd ibn 'Atiyyah informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: My father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding his saying: "Allah guides to His light whom He wills," and it is the parable of the believer.
