Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 8 · Page 169His saying (the Exalted): 'When he comes to it, he finds it to be nothing.'

Translation · EN

he finds it to be nothing and is seized at that point. He says: The disbeliever is likewise; he thinks his deed will suffice him or benefit him in some way, and he is not upon the guidance until death comes to him. When death comes to him, he finds that his deed did not suffice him in anything, nor did it benefit him, except as it benefited the intensely thirsty one who sought the mirage.

14675 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, [saying]: Abu Yahya al-Razi reported to us, from Ibn Sinan, from al-Dahhak, regarding "Like a mirage in a lowland," he said: The parable of the disbeliever is like a mirage in a lowland which the thirsty one—the one whose thirst is intense—thinks is water. He saw a mirage and thought it was water; so when he came to it, he did not find it to be anything, and he found Allah at it, so He paid him his account in full. And Allah is swift in account.

14676 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, [saying]: al-Husayn ibn 'Ali reported to us, [saying]: 'Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, [saying]: Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi: The disbelievers will be resurrected while their necks have been severed from thirst, then a mirage will be raised for them in a lowland of the earth. When they look at it, they will think it is water, and they will go to it to drink from it, but they will find nothing. The mirage is a parable for the deeds of the disbelievers; just as that mirage passed away and they were unable to obtain anything from it, likewise their deeds have vanished, and they did not obtain any good from them.

14677 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: Asbagh reported to us, [saying]: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "Their deeds are like a mirage in a lowland," [meaning] like a mirage; he estimated the mirage and trusted in himself that it was water, but when he came to it, he did not find it to be anything.

His saying, the Exalted: "Until, when he came to it, he found it to be nothing."

14678 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, [saying]: Shababah reported to us, [saying]: Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid(1): "Until, when he came to it, he found it to be nothing," and his coming to it is his death and his departure from the world.

14679 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, [saying]: al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, [saying]: Yazid ibn Zuray' reported to us, [saying]: Sa'id reported to us, from Qatadah, regarding His saying: "Until, when he came to it, he found it to be nothing," this is a parable that Allah has set forth for the deed of the disbeliever. He thinks that he has [done] good and that he stood upon good, until when the Day of Resurrection comes, he finds no good that he had sent forth, nor any merit he had advanced, and he finds Allah at it, so He pays him his account in full.

14680 - Muhammad ibn Sa'd informed us in what he wrote to me, [saying]: My father narrated to me, my uncle narrated to me, from his father, from his grandfather, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "Until, when he came to it, he found it to be nothing," death comes to him, and he does not find that his deed has sufficed him in anything, nor did it benefit him, except as it benefited the intensely thirsty one who sought the mirage.
