[Surah Al-Anbiya]

21

The Statement of the Exalted: "Their reckoning has approached for the people."

13598 - From Ibn Jurayj regarding His statement: "Their reckoning has approached for the people," he said: What they are being promised.

The Statement of the Exalted: "No reminder comes to them from their Lord..."

13599 - From Qatadah regarding His statement: "No reminder comes to them from their Lord," he says: Nothing of the Qur'an descends upon them. Regarding His statement: "...their hearts distracted [in play]," he said: Negligent. Regarding His statement: "And those who do wrong conceal their private conversation," he says: Those who do wrong concealed the conversation.

The Statement of the Exalted: "And they conceal their private conversation..."

13600 - From Al-Suddi regarding His statement: "And they conceal their private conversation," he said: They concealed their secret talk among themselves: "Is this but a human like you?" meaning Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. "Will you then approach magic?" they say: Following Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is following magic. Regarding His statement: "He said, 'My Lord knows the word,'" he said: The unseen. Regarding His statement: "Rather, they said, 'A mixture of dreams,'" he said: False dreams.

The Statement of the Exalted: "Rather, they said, 'A mixture of dreams'..."

13601 - From Qatadah regarding His statement: "Rather, they said, 'A mixture of dreams,'" meaning: The fabrication of dreams; they are only visions he saw. "Rather, he has invented it. Rather, he is a poet." All of this was done by them. "Let him bring us a sign as the former ones were sent," just as Moses and Jesus came with clear proofs, and the messengers. "There was not a city before them that We destroyed..." meaning: If the messengers came to their people with signs and they did not believe, they were not granted respite.

13602 - It is mentioned from Zayd ibn al-Hubab, who said: Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to us, who said: Al-Harith ibn Yazid al-Hadrami narrated to us, from Ali ibn Rabah al-Lakhmi, who said: One who witnessed 'Ubadah ibn al-Samit told me that he was saying: We were in the mosque.
