one of them, they would wait for him and not eat until he returned, for fear of sin. People used to eat in one place until someone came to join them in eating. Thus, He said: "And there is no blame upon you that you eat together," meaning when you are a group.
14888 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-'Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray' reported to us, Sa'id reported to us, from Qatadah regarding: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately," that a clan from Banu Kinanah ibn Khuzaymah used to consider it shameful for one of them to eat alone during the Jahiliyyah (pre-Islamic era), to the extent that a man would drive his milking camels while he was hungry until he found someone to eat and drink with him. A man would even set up a dummy beside him when he could not find someone to eat and drink with him. So Allah revealed: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately."
His saying, the Almighty: "or separately."
14889 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah reported to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding "or separately," meaning: when you are dispersed. If one of you is absent and then arrives, he may eat his portion, and there is no harm in it. Something similar was reported from Muqatil ibn Hayyan.
14890 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us, in what he wrote to me, Asbagh informed us, saying: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the saying of Allah: "There is no blame upon you that you eat together or separately." He said: Among the Arabs were those who would never eat except together, and among them were those who would not eat together. So Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, stated that.
His saying, the Almighty: "So when you enter houses."
14891 - Muhammad ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Muhal al-San'ani narrated to us in Mecca, 'Abd al-Razzaq reported to us, from Ma'mar, from 'Amr ibn Dinar, from Ibn 'Abbas, regarding His saying: "So when you enter houses, greet one another," he said: When you enter the mosque.
14892 - My father narrated to us, 'Abdah ibn Sulayman reported to us, Ibn al-Mubarak informed us, Ma'mar informed us, from al-Zuhri and Qatadah, regarding His saying: "So when you enter houses, greet one another," they both said: Your house, when you enter, say: "Peace be upon you."
14893 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah reported to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me,
