"Take me with you." So they took him aboard, but he brought out the casting of lots, and they refused to accept it from him. He said: "If I cast it among you, will you accept it?" They agreed. When the ship sailed out into the sea and the sea and waves overtook them, Jonah said to them: "Cast me overboard so that you may be saved." They said: "Rather, we will hold onto you so we may be saved." He said: "Then cast lots among you." They cast lots three times, and the lot fell upon him. Allah inspired a fish, known as 'al-Najm' (the star) from the Green Sea, saying: "Split the seas until you take Jonah, for Jonah is not a provision for you, but his belly is a prison for him. So do not scratch his skin and do not break his bone." It came until it met the ship. They cast lots for the third time, and the lot fell upon him, so he threw himself into the water. The fish swallowed him and split the seas with him until it arrived at the Green Sea.
His saying, the Almighty: "There is no god but You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers."
13710 - Abu Abdullah ibn Abd al-Rahman, the brother of Ibn Wahb, narrated to us: My paternal uncle narrated to us: Abu Sakhr narrated to me that Yazid al-Raqashi narrated to him, saying: I heard Anas ibn Malik—and I know not but that Anas attributed the Hadith to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace)—that the Prophet Jonah (peace be upon him), when it occurred to him to supplicate with these words while he was in the belly of the whale, said: "O Allah, there is no god but You; exalted are You; indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." This supplication proceeded to encompass the Throne, and the angels said: "O Lord, a weak voice known from a strange land?" He said: "Do you not know him?" They said: "No, O Lord. And who is he?" He said: "My servant Jonah." They said: "Your servant Jonah, whose righteous deeds and answered supplications have always been raised to You?" He said: "Yes." They said: "O Lord, will You not have mercy on what he used to do during his time of ease and save him from this calamity?" He said: "Yes." So He commanded the whale, and it cast him out onto the open land.
13711 - From Anas, attributing it to the Prophet: That Jonah, when it occurred to him to supplicate to Allah with the words when he called out from the belly of the whale, said: "O Allah, there is no god but You; exalted are You; indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers." The supplication proceeded to encompass the Throne, and the angels said: "This is a weak voice known from a strange land." He said: "Do you not know that?" They said: "O Lord, and who is he?" He said: "That is My servant Jonah." They said: "Your servant Jonah, whose righteous deeds and answered supplications have always been raised to You?" He said: "Yes."
