- Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Numayr reported to us, Sufyan reported to us, from Abu al-Sawda' al-Nahdi, Ibn Sabit reported to us, he said: Ubayy ibn Khalaf prepared food and then came to a gathering where the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was present. He said: "Stand up," and they stood up except for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said to him: "Stand up." He replied: "No, until you bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah." So he bore witness, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up. Then ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt met him and said: "You have done such and such." He replied: "I only intended [it] for our food." That is [the meaning of] His saying: "And the day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands, he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'"
- Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, al-Fayd ibn Wathiq al-Thaqafi reported to us, Ja‘far ibn Sulayman reported to us, he said: I heard Abu ‘Imran al-Jawni say regarding: "And the day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands," he said: It has reached me that he bites it until the bone is broken, then it returns [to its state].
- My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Musaffa reported to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Hafs reported to us, from Hushaym, from Abu Balj, from ‘Amr ibn Maymun regarding His saying: "He will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way,'" it is ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt.
- ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali reported to us, ‘Amir reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi: "And the day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands, he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way,'" he said: It was revealed concerning ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt. He had frequented the gathering of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and intended to accept Islam. Umayyah ibn Khalaf met him and said: "O ‘Uqbah, it has reached me that you have apostatized and followed Muhammad." He said: "I did." He said: "Then my face is forbidden to yours until you go to him, spit in his face, and renounce him, so your people may know that you are an enemy to those whom they despise and [that you have] broken their unity." He obeyed him and came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), spat in his face, and renounced him. This was very difficult for the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed concerning him, informing of the remorse that will come to him and his disavowal of his close friend, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, saying: "And the day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands, he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'" And the "way" is obedience.
- Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ reported to us, Sa‘id reported to us, from Qatadah regarding His saying: "Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way," meaning: by the obedience of Allah. And the same was narrated from al-Suddi.
