His saying: "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend."
[The First Interpretation]
15105 - Abu Sa‘id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Ibn Numayr reported to us, Sufyan reported to us, from Abu al-Sawda' al-Nahdi, Ibn Sabit narrated to me: "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend," meaning Ubayy ibn Khalaf. The same was narrated from ‘Amr ibn Maymun.
The Second Interpretation:
15106 - Muhammad ibn ‘Ammar narrated to us, Sahl ibn Bakkar reported to us, Hushaym reported to us, ‘Ali ibn Yazid informed us, from Sa‘id ibn al-Musayyib, who said regarding: "And the day the wrongdoer will bite on his hands, he will say, 'Oh, I wish I had taken with the Messenger a way.'" He said: This is ‘Uqbah. "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend." He said: This is Umayyah. ‘Uqbah was a close companion to Umayyah. It reached Umayyah that ‘Uqbah wished to accept Islam, so he said: "My face is forbidden to yours, if you accept Islam, that I shall ever speak to you again."
15107 - ‘Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn ‘Ali reported to us, ‘Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi: "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend," and the "one" is Umayyah ibn Khalaf.
The Third Interpretation:
15108 - Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Musaddad reported to us, Khalid ibn ‘Abd Allah reported to us, Husayn ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman reported to us, from Abu Malik al-Ghifari regarding His saying: "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend," he said: Umayyah ibn Khalaf and ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt were brothers in the Age of Ignorance. So Umayyah ibn Khalaf would say: "Oh, I wish I had not taken ‘Uqbah ibn Abi Mu‘ayt as a friend."
The Fourth Interpretation:
15109 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah reported to us, Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend," he said: The Devil (Shaytan).
15110 - My father narrated to us, Muslim ibn Ibrahim reported to us, Abu ‘Aqil al-Dawraqi reported to us, from Abu Raja' regarding His saying: "Oh, woe to me! I wish I had not taken this one as a friend," he said: His friend is the Devil.
(1). Ibn Kathir said: Whether the cause of its revelation was ‘Uqbah or another of the wretched ones, it is general for every wrongdoer (6/86). (2). Al-Tafsir 2/452.
