His saying (Mighty and Majestic is He): "And those who disbelieved said, 'Why was the Qur'an not sent down to him all at once?'"

15126 - Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Qasim ibn ‘Atiyyah narrated to us, Ahmad ibn ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Abd Allah ibn Sa‘d al-Dashtaki reported to us, my father narrated to us, al-Ash‘ath narrated to me, from Ja‘far ibn Abi al-Mughirah, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn ‘Abbas, who said: The polytheists said: "If Muhammad is a prophet as he claims, then why does his Lord not reveal the Qur'an to him all at once, as He reveals to him one verse, two verses, and a chapter?"

So Allah revealed to His Prophet the answer to what they said: "And those who disbelieved said, 'Why was the Qur'an not sent down to him all at once?'" to the end of the verse.

15127 - It was mentioned from ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn ‘Umar ibn Rustah al-Asbahani, Ibn Mahdi reported to us, Abu Salamah reported to us, from Hakim ibn Jubayr, from Sa‘id ibn Jubayr, I said to Ibn ‘Abbas: Inform me about the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic is He): "Indeed, We sent it down during the Night of Decree," and: "Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night," and: "the month of Ramadan, in which was revealed the Qur'an." Was it all of it or some of it? Ibn ‘Abbas said: Allah revealed the Qur'an all at once from the seventh heaven to the heaven of this world on the Night of Decree, and it was placed at the positions of the stars: "So I swear by the positions of the stars," up to His saying: "the purified," meaning the angels. Jibril (peace be upon him) would bring it down whenever they brought a parable, seeking to find fault in him; the Book of Allah would come down speaking. The Jews said: "O Abu al-Qasim, why was this Qur'an not sent down all at once, as the Torah was sent down to Musa?" So Allah revealed: "Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have spaced it distinctly. And they do not come to you with a parable except that We bring you the truth and the best explanation," and He recited: "And [it is] a Qur'an which We have separated [by intervals] that you might recite it to the people over a prolonged period."

15128 - Muhammad ibn Yahya narrated to us, al-‘Abbas ibn al-Walid informed us, Yazid ibn Zuray‘ reported to us, Sa‘id reported to us, from Qatadah: "And those who disbelieved said, 'Why was the Qur'an not sent down to him all at once?'" as it was sent down to Musa and as it was sent down to ‘Isa (peace be upon them both).
