- My father narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Sulayman al-Wasiti reported to us, Mubarak reported to us, from al-Hasan: "And those who say, 'Our Lord, avert from us...'" the verse, he said: "Everything that befalls the son of Adam departs from him and is not 'gharama' (an engaging, inseparable debt); rather, the 'gharama' is that which is binding as long as the heavens and the earth endure."

- Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, Sa‘id ibn Sulayman reported to us, Abu Ma‘shar reported to us, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b: "Indeed, its punishment is ever engaging," he said: "It is what they did not enjoy in the world."

- Abu Zur‘ah narrated to us, ‘Abd al-Rahim ibn Mutarrif reported to us, ‘Isa ibn Yunus reported to us, from Musa ibn ‘Ubaydah, Muhammad ibn Ka‘b informed us regarding the saying of Allah: "Indeed, its punishment is ever engaging," he said: "Indeed, Allah, Majestic and Exalted is He, asked the disbelievers about the blessing, and they did not return it to Him."

- My father narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali reported to us, Muhammad ibn al-Zibriqan reported to us, Musa ibn ‘Ubaydah reported to us, from Muhammad ibn Ka‘b regarding His saying: "Indeed, its punishment is ever engaging," he said: "He asked them about the bounty, and they did not produce it; so He imposed it upon them as a debt and entered them into the Fire."

- ‘Abd Allah ibn Hammad al-Tahrani reported to me in what he wrote to me, ‘Abd al-Razzaq reported to us, Ja‘far ibn Sulayman al-Taymi reported to us, he said: I heard him, and a man asked him, saying: "O Abu al-Mu‘tamir, have you seen the saying of Allah, Mighty and Majestic is He: 'Indeed, its punishment is ever engaging,' what is the 'gharama'?" He said: "Allah knows best," [repeated] three times, then said: "Every prisoner must eventually have his shackles undone one day, or he will die, except the prisoner of Hell; he is the 'gharama', and he shall never be set free."

His saying, the Exalted: "Indeed, it is evil as a settlement and residence."

- My father narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn al-Rabi‘ reported to us, Abu al-Ahwas reported to us, from al-A‘mash, from Malik ibn al-Harith, he said: "When a man is cast into the Fire, he falls therein. When he reaches some of its gates, it is said: 'Stay where you are until you are offered hospitality.'" He said: "Then he is given a cup of the venom of vipers and scorpions to drink." He said: "Then the skin separates on its own, and the hair on its own, and the nerves on their own, and the veins on their own."

- My father narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn al-Rabi‘ reported to us, Abu al-Ahwas reported to us, from al-A‘mash, from Mujahid, from ‘Ubayd ibn ‘Umayr, he said: "Indeed, in the Fire there are pits in which there are snakes like Bactrian camels and scorpions like dark mules." He said: "So when they are thrown into the Fire, these creatures emerge toward them from their abodes and seize their extremities and their skins or their hair, and they peel their flesh down to their feet; then, when they find the heat of the Fire, they retreat."
