15378 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih the scribe of al-Layth reported to us, al-Layth reported to us, Ibrahim ibn Nashit narrated to me, he said: I asked ‘Umar, the mawla of Ghufrah, about extravagance: 'What is it?' He said: 'There is nothing you spend in the obedience [of Allah] that is extravagance,' meaning in the obedience of Allah.
15379 - Abu Yazid al-Qaratisi informed us in what he wrote to me, Asbagh informed us, he said: I heard ‘Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam regarding the word of Allah: "And those who, when they spend, are not extravagant," he said: "They are not extravagant in the acts of disobedience to Allah, and everything that is spent in the disobedience of Allah, even if it is small, is extravagance."
15380 - My father narrated to us, al-Walid ibn Salih reported to us, Makhlad ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Wasiti reported to us, from Dawud ibn Abi Hind, he said: I said to al-Hasan, 'A man prepares food and spends much wealth on it.' He said: 'There is no extravagance in food.'
15381 - ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, ‘Amr ibn ‘Ali reported to us, Yazid ibn Harun reported to us, Sufyan ibn Husayn informed us, from Abu Bishr Ja‘far ibn Abi Wahshiyyah, he said: People gathered around Iyas ibn Mu‘awiyah in Kufa and said, 'What is extravagance?' He said: 'Whatever you have exceeded the command of Allah in, it is extravagance.' Sufyan ibn Husayn said: 'And whatever you have fallen short in regarding the command of Allah, it is extravagance.'
15382 - My father narrated to us, Musa ibn Ayyub reported to us, Makhlad ibn al-Husayn reported to us, from Hisham, he said: Ibn Sirin, when he was asked about extravagance, 'What is it?' He said: 'Spending in that which is not its right.'
15383 - My father narrated to us, Musa ibn Ayyub reported to us, Baqiyyah informed us, from Hisham, from al-Hasan, he said: 'There is no extravagance in spending in the way of Allah.'
15384 - My father narrated to us, ‘Isam ibn Rawwad reported to us, my father reported to us, a man reported to us, from al-Hasan, he said: 'It is from extravagance that a man eats everything he desires.'
His saying, the Exalted: "And are not stingy."
15385 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salih reported to us, Mu‘awiyah ibn Salih narrated to me, from ‘Ali ibn Abi Talhah, from Ibn ‘Abbas regarding His saying: "And are not stingy," he said: "They are the believers; they do not act stingily such that they withhold the rights of Allah."
15386 - It was read to Yunus ibn ‘Abd al-A‘la, Ibn Wahb informed us, Khalid ibn Humayd informed me, from ‘Uqayl, from Ibn Shihab, that he used to say: "And are not stingy," he says: 'He does not withhold it from a right, nor does he spend it on falsehood.'
