Translation · EN

al-Qattan, from 'Isa ibn Rashid, from Abu 'Awn al-Ansari, that he heard 'Umar ibn 'Abd al-'Aziz saying: "Every instance in the Qur'an of 'abiding' (khulud) implies that there is no repentance for it."

His saying, the Exalted: "therein"

15414 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah reported to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the saying of Allah: "And he will abide therein," meaning: in the punishment. And regarding His saying "humiliated" (muhana), he means he will be humiliated therein.

His saying, the Exalted: "Except for those who repent"

15415 - My father narrated to us, Adam al-'Asqalani reported to us, Shu'bah reported to us, from Mansur, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, he said: I asked Ibn 'Abbas about His saying: "And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity" up to His saying: "Except for those who repent." He said: "This was during the Age of Ignorance (Jahiliyyah)."

15416 - My father narrated to us, Adam reported to us, Shu'bah reported to us, from Abu Iyas Mu'awiyah ibn Qurrah, Shahr ibn Hawshab informed me that he heard Ibn 'Abbas saying: "This verse was revealed: 'And whoever kills a believer intentionally, his recompense is Hell' after His saying: 'Except for those who repent and believe and do righteous work' by a year."

15417 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Abu Zur'ah reported to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah reported to us, 'Abd Allah ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, he said: "This verse was revealed: 'And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity'—the verse—concerning the disbelievers of Mecca. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) migrated to Medina, Wahshi, the servant of Tu'aymah ibn 'Adi ibn Nawfal, wrote to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Medina: 'I have committed polytheism, adultery, and killing'—and he had killed Hamzah ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib on the day of Uhud. He said: 'Is there any repentance for me?' So it was revealed concerning him, and He made an exception: 'Except for those who repent,' meaning: from polytheism."

15418 - 'Ali ibn al-Husayn narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Abi Hammad reported to us, Ibrahim ibn al-Mukhtar and Abu Zuhayr reported to us, from al-Hajjaj, from 'Atiyyah, from Abu Sa'id, he said: "When Wahshi became Muslim, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: 'And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity, and do not kill the soul which Allah has forbidden, except by right.' Wahshi and his companions said: 'We have committed all of this!' So Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves'—the verse."
