15464 - al-Hasan ibn Muhammad ibn Salamah al-Nahwi narrated to us, Habban reported to us, 'Abd Allah reported to us, Muhammad ibn Muslim reported to us, Ibrahim ibn Maysarah informed me, he said: It reached me that Ibn Mas'ud passed by some vain talk while turning away from it, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: "Ibn Mas'ud has surely become noble, or has ended his day as a noble person." Then Ibrahim ibn Maysarah recited: "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity (karaman)."

15465 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu al-Husayn al-'Ukli reported to us, from Qays, from Isma'il ibn Salman, from Abu 'Umar al-Bazzar, from Ibn al-Hanafiyyah regarding "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity," he said: The vain talk (al-laghw).

The second interpretation:

15466 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, Abu Khalid and 'Abdah reported to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak regarding "And when they pass by vain talk," he said: With polytheism (al-shirk).

The third interpretation:

15467 - My father narrated to us, Abu Salamah reported to us, from Hushaym, from al-'Awwam, from Mujahid: "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity," when they come upon a mention of sexual intercourse, they speak of it indirectly (kinayah).

15468 - My father narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Dawraqi reported to us, 'Uthman ibn al-Yaman reported to us, from Abu 'Awn, from 'Amr ibn Qays al-Mula'i regarding "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity," in their speech they speak of it indirectly.

The fourth interpretation:

15469 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah narrated to us, Shababah reported to us, Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity."

15470 - 'Abd Allah ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Husayn ibn 'Ali reported to us, 'Amir ibn al-Furat reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi regarding "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity," he said: The vain talk is falsehood and the offensive speech of the polytheists against the Muslims.

His saying, the Exalted: They pass by with dignity (karaman)

15471 - Hajjaj ibn Hamzah al-'Ijli narrated to us, Shababah reported to us, Warqa' reported to us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid regarding His saying: "And when they pass by vain talk, they pass by with dignity," he said: They pardoned (safahu).
