[Surah al-Hajj]
22
His saying, the Almighty: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing."
13767 - From al-Hasan and others, from 'Imran ibn Husayn who said: When "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing" up to His saying: "...but the punishment of Allah is severe," was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was on a journey, he said: "Do you know what day that is?" They said: "Allah and His Messenger know best!" He said: "That is the day when Allah says to Adam: 'Send forth the contingent for the Fire.' He will say: 'O Lord, what is the contingent for the Fire?' He will say: 'From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine to the Fire, and one to Paradise.'" The Muslims began to weep, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Draw near [to the truth] and act uprightly, for there was never a prophecy except that a period of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) preceded it. The remainder will be taken from the period of ignorance, and if it is not complete, it will be completed from the hypocrites. You are only like a mark (raqmah) on the forelimb of a beast, or like a mole on the side of a camel." Then he said: "I surely hope that you will be a quarter of the people of Paradise." They said "Allahu Akbar!" Then he said: "I surely hope that you will be a third of the people of Paradise." They said "Allahu Akbar!" Then he said: "I surely hope that you will be half of the people of Paradise." They said "Allahu Akbar!" He said: "I do not know if he said two-thirds or not."
13768 - From Anas who said: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing" up to His saying: "...but the punishment of Allah is severe," was revealed to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was on a journey, and he raised his voice with it until his companions gathered around him. He said: "Do you know what day this is? This is the day when Allah says to Adam: 'O Adam, rise and send forth the contingent for the Fire.' He will say: 'O Lord, how many?' He will say: 'From every thousand, nine hundred and ninety-nine.'" This weighed heavily upon the Muslims, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Act uprightly, draw near [to the truth], and rejoice. For by Him in Whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, you are among mankind only like a mole on the side of a camel, or like a mark on the forelimb of a beast. And indeed, there are two nations with you which have never been with anything without increasing its number: Gog and Magog, along with those who perish from the disbelievers among humans and jinn."
13769 - From Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) recited this verse while his companions were with him: "O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing."
