His saying: "So he cast down his staff"

15586 - My father narrated to us, 'Abd al-A'la ibn Hammad al-Narsi reported to us, Abu Badr Shuja' ibn al-Walid reported to us, from Ibn Abi Ghaniyah, from al-Hakam, who said: The staff of Moses was made of boxthorn (aw-saj), and the boxthorn was not subjected to anyone after him.

It was [also] narrated from Sa'id ibn Jubayr who said: The staff of Moses was solely of boxthorn.

15587 - Abu 'Abd Allah Muhammad ibn Hammad al-Tahrani informed us in what he wrote to me, that Isma'il ibn 'Abd al-Karim informed [us], from 'Abd al-Samad ibn Ma'qil, who said: I heard Wahb ibn Munabbih say: Pharaoh said to Moses, "Did we not raise you among us as a child?" Moses responded to him with what Allah had returned to him. Pharaoh said: "Seize him." Moses hastened and cast down his staff, and behold, it was a manifest serpent (thu'ban). It attacked a group of people, and they fled from it; twenty-five thousand of them died, as they killed one another. Pharaoh stood up, fleeing until he entered the house.

His saying, the Exalted: "And behold, it was a manifest serpent (thu'ban)."

15588 - 'Ammar ibn Khalid al-Wasiti narrated to us, Muhammad ibn al-Hasan and Yazid ibn Harun reported to us, from Asbagh ibn Zayd, from al-Qasim ibn Abi Ayyub, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, from Ibn 'Abbas, who said: "So he cast down his staff," and it turned into a great serpent, opening its mouth, rushing toward Pharaoh. When Pharaoh saw that it was heading toward him, he feared it and lunged off his throne and sought help from Moses to restrain it from him.

15589 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashajj narrated to us, 'Abdah reported to us, from Juwaybir, from al-Dahhak, from Ibn 'Abbas regarding His saying: "a manifest serpent (thu'ban)," he said: The male snake.

15590 - My father narrated to us, Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-A'la al-San'ani reported to us, Muhammad ibn Thawr reported to us, from Ma'mar, from Qatadah: "And behold, it was a manifest serpent (thu'ban)," he said: It turned into a great serpent. And another said: Like a city. And Qatadah said: It consumed all their magic.
