ibn Abi 'Uthman reported to us, Musa ibn 'Ubaydah reported to us, from Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurazi, from 'Abd Allah ibn Shaddad, from Ka'b al-Ahbar who said: The family of Jacob gathered to Joseph; they were eighty-six people, male and female. Moses went out with them on the day he departed, and they were six hundred and something. Pharaoh went out in their pursuit, following them on a dark horse; eight hundred thousand dark horses were of his color, besides other colors of horses. The north wind blew, and beneath Gabriel—peace be upon him—was a lively horse, and Michael—peace be upon him—drove them, such that no one among them would stray unless he gathered him back. The people said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have encountered such hardship and torment from Pharaoh, so how will it be if we do what we are doing? Where is the refuge?" He said: "The sea."

15659 - 'Ali ibn al-Hasan al-Hisinjani narrated to us, Musaddad reported to us, Mu'tamir reported to us, from his father who said: I heard 'Abd al-Rahman, the keeper of the watering place, regarding His saying: "And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Moses said: 'Indeed, we are to be overtaken!'" He said: They took it as an evil omen against Moses and said: "We were harmed before you came to us, and after you have come to us [as well]."

His saying: "[Moses] said: 'No!'"

15660 - My father narrated to us, Abu al-Jumahir reported to us, Sa'id informed us, from Qatadah who said: Khulayd ibn 'Abd Allah al-'Asari narrated to me that the believer from the family of Pharaoh was in front of the people. He said: "O Prophet of Allah, where have you been commanded to go?" He said: "In front of you." He said: "Is there anything in front of me except the sea?" He said: "By Allah, I have not lied, nor have I been lied to." Then he traveled for a while and said the same thing, and Moses replied to him the same. Moses said—and he was the most knowledgeable of the people about Allah: "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

His saying: "Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me."

15661 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, 'Amr ibn Hammad reported to us, Asbat reported to us, from al-Suddi who said: Moses was at the rear guard of the Children of Israel, and Aaron was in front of them, leading them. The believer said to Moses: "O Prophet of Allah, where have you been commanded to go?" He said: "The sea." He intended to plunge in, but Moses stopped him. Moses went out with six hundred and twenty thousand fighters. Pharaoh pursued them with Haman in his vanguard, with one million and seven hundred thousand horses, among which there was not a single mare. Then the Children of Israel looked at Pharaoh as he had followed them. They said: "O Moses, indeed we are to be overtaken!" Moses said: "No! Indeed, with me is my Lord; He will guide me," meaning: He will suffice me. He said: "It is expected that your Lord will destroy your enemy and grant you succession in the land."
