- From Ibn Abbas, he said: This verse was revealed concerning Abdullah ibn Unays. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) sent him with two men: one was a Muhajir and the other was from the Ansar. They boasted about their lineages, so Abdullah ibn Unays became angry and killed the Ansari, then apostatized from Islam and fled to Makkah. So [the verse] was revealed concerning him: "And whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [with] injustice, We will make him taste a painful punishment." Meaning, whoever seeks refuge in the Sanctuary with deviation, meaning by turning away from Islam.
- From Ibn Abbas regarding His saying: "And whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [with] injustice," he said: "Through shirk (polytheism)."
- From Ya'la ibn Umayyah, from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "The hoarding of food in the Sanctuary is deviation therein."
- From Ibn Umar, he said: "Selling food in Makkah is deviation."
- From Mujahid, he said: Abdullah ibn Amr had two tents: one in the Hill (the area outside the Sanctuary) and the other in the Haram (the Sanctuary). When he wanted to pray, he would pray in the one in the Haram, and when he wanted to rebuke his family, he would rebuke them in the one in the Hill. It was said to him [about that], and he said: "We used to be told that among the deviations therein is for a man to say: 'By God, no' and 'By God, yes.'"
- From Sa'id ibn Jubayr regarding the verse, he said: "Insulting a servant in the Sanctuary is an injustice, and anything above that [is likewise]."
- From Ibn Abbas, he said: "The trading of a leader in Makkah is deviation."
- From al-Rabi' ibn Anas regarding His saying: "And whoever intends [a deed] therein of deviation [with] injustice, We will make him taste a painful punishment," he said: "A sheikh from the progeny of the Muhajirin and the Ansar told us that they informed him that whoever intended against it what the companions of the Elephant intended, their punishment was hastened for them in this world." He said: "Its desecration is only brought about by its own people." He informed me regarding them that he found two lines in Makkah written on the Maqam (Station of Abraham). As for one of them, its writing was: 'In the name of Allah and by the Blessing, I have established My house in Makkah, making its food meat, fat, and dates, and whoever enters it shall be safe. No one shall desecrate it except its own people.' He said: 'Had it not been that its own people were those who did to it what you know, the punishment would have been hastened for them in this world.' He said: 'Then he informed me that Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-Aas said before it was desecrated by what it was desecrated with: I find written in the first book: A slave of Allah will desecrate the Sanctuary through it,' and present with him were Abdullah ibn Umar ibn al-Khattab and Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr.
