- From Ayyash ibn Abi Rabi'ah al-Makhzumi, from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said: "This nation will continue to be in a good state as long as they honor this sanctuary (al-hurmah) with its due honor," meaning Makkah. "So if they neglect that, they will be destroyed."
His saying, the Almighty: "And avoid false speech."
- From Mujahid, regarding "And avoid false speech," he said: "Lying."
- From Muqatil, regarding "And avoid false speech," meaning shirk (associating partners with Allah) in speech. This is because they used to circumambulate the House and say in their Talbiyah: 'Here I am, there is no partner for You, except a partner who is Yours, whom You own and whatever he owns.'
His saying, the Almighty: "Hanifiyyah (inclining towards truth) to Allah, not associating anything with Him."
- From Ibn Abbas, regarding His saying: "Hanifiyyah to Allah, not associating anything with Him," he said: "Pilgrims to Allah, not associating anything with Him." This is because the people of the Jahiliyyah used to perform Hajj while they were polytheists. So when Allah made Islam manifest, Allah said to the Muslims: 'Perform Hajj now without associating anyone with Allah.'
- From Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, he said: "People used to perform Hajj while they were polytheists, and they would call them 'Hanifiyyah pilgrims.' Then, 'Hanifiyyah to Allah, not associating anything with Him' was revealed."
- From Abdullah ibn al-Qasim, the freed slave of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, he said: "People from Mudar and others used to perform Hajj to the House while they were polytheists, and those among the polytheists who did not perform Hajj to the House would say: 'Say Hanifiyyah.' So Allah said: 'Hanifiyyah to Allah, not associating anything with Him,' meaning: Pilgrims who do not associate anything with Him."
- From Mujahid, regarding "Hanifiyyah," he said: "Followers [of the truth]."
- From Qatadah, regarding His saying: "And whoever associates others with Allah, it is as if he had fallen from the sky," he said: "This is a parable Allah set forth for whoever associates partners with Allah, regarding his distance from guidance and his destruction."
- From Mujahid, regarding His saying: "In a remote place (sihaq)," he said: "Distant."
