14001 - From Abu al-'Aliyah, he said: Surat al-Najm was revealed in Makkah, and the Quraysh said: "O Muhammad, the poor and the destitute sit with you, and people come to you from the corners of the earth; if you would mention our gods favorably, we would sit with you." So the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) recited Surat al-Najm, and when he reached this verse: "Have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzzah, and Manat, the third, the other one?" the devil cast upon his tongue: "They are the exalted gharaniq, whose intercession is hoped for." When he finished the surah, he prostrated, and the Muslims and the polytheists prostrated, except for Abu Uhayha Sa'id ibn al-'As, who took a handful of dust and prostrated upon it, saying: "It is time for the son of Abu Kabsha to mention our gods favorably." This news reached the Muslims who were in Abyssinia, stating that the Quraysh had accepted Islam, so they wanted to return. It weighed heavily upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and his companions what the devil had cast upon his tongue, so Allah revealed: "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet."

14002 - From Qatadah, he said: While the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was praying at the Maqam (Station of Ibrahim), he became drowsy, and the devil cast a word upon his tongue, so he spoke it, and the polytheists seized upon it against him. He said: "Have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzzah, and Manat, the third, the other one?" and the devil cast upon his tongue while he was drowsy: "And their intercession is indeed to be hoped for, and they are truly the exalted gharaniq." The polytheists memorized it, and the devil informed them that the Prophet of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) had recited it, so their tongues flowed with it. Then Allah revealed: "And We did not send before you any messenger or prophet," so Allah defeated the devil and taught His Prophet his argument.

14003 - From al-Suddi, he said: The Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) went out to the mosque to pray, and while he was reciting, he said: "Have you considered al-Lat and al-'Uzzah, and Manat, the third, the other one?" The devil cast upon his tongue, so he said: "Those are the exalted gharaniq, and their intercession is hoped for." When he reached the end of the surah, he prostrated, and his companions prostrated, and the polytheists prostrated due to his mention of their gods. When he raised his head, they carried him and rushed throughout the outskirts of Makkah saying: "The prophet of the children of 'Abd Manaf!" Until Jibril came to him and presented it to him, so he recited those two phrases. Jibril said: "I seek refuge in Allah! I did not recite this to you!" It weighed heavily upon him, so Allah revealed to comfort him: "And We did not send before you..."

14004 - From Ibn 'Abbas: "When he desires (yatamanna), the devil casts into his desire (umniyyatihi)," meaning: when he speaks, the devil casts into his speech.
