Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 8 · Page 70[Surat al-Mu'minun (23): Verse 116]

the heavens and the earth.

Do you not know that no one is secure tomorrow unless he was cautious today and feared it, [and sold what is fleeting for what is everlasting,] and little for much, and fear for security? Do you not see that you are from the loins of [the dead, and there will be those remaining after you] when you are returned to the Best of Inheritors? Then, every day you escort someone going out or coming in to Allah, who has fulfilled his vow and whose term has expired, until you hide him in a cleft of the earth, in the belly of a crevice, neither spacious nor bedded. He has departed from his loved ones, has come into contact with the soil, and has faced the reckoning. He is held captive by his deeds, independent of what he left behind, and in need of what he sent forth. So fear Allah before His covenants expire and death descends upon you. He then raised [he placed the edge of] his cloak over his face and wept, and made those around him weep.

His saying: "So high above all is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth."

14070 - Yahya ibn Nasr al-Khawlani narrated to us, Ibn Wahb narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah informed me, from Ibn Hubayrah, from Hanash ibn 'Ubayd Allah, that an afflicted man was brought past Ibn Mas'ud, so he recited into his ear: "Then did you think that We created you in jest and that you to Us would not be returned? So high above all is Allah, the Sovereign, the Truth. There is no deity except Him, Lord of the Noble Throne," until he concluded the Surah, and he was cured. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What did you recite into his ear?" He informed him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if a man who had conviction were to recite it over a mountain, it would move."

14071 - Al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Ibrahim ibn 'Abd Allah al-Harawi narrated to us, Hajjaj narrated to us, from Ibn Jurayj, from Mujahid, regarding "So high above all is Allah (fata'ala Allah)," he said: It is self-restraint; He restrained Himself, and the angels restrained themselves, and nothing [exists except that it] glorifies Him.

His saying: "The Sovereign."

14072 - Ishaq ibn Wahb al-'Allaf al-Wasiti narrated to us, Abu al-Musayyab (Salamah) ibn Salam narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn Khunays narrated to us, from Nahshal ibn Sa'id, from al-Dahhak ibn Muzahim, from 'Abd Allah ibn 'Abbas who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "A safeguard for my nation against drowning if they embark on ships: 'In the name of Allah, the Sovereign.'"
