Tafsir Ibn Abi Hatim
Volume 8 · Page 88[Surah al-Nur (24): Verse 5]

Translation · EN

ibn Yazid ibn Jabir al-Azdi said: I was sitting one day near Makhul, when some of my brethren came to me and asked me about the person who has received the prescribed punishment (al-mahdud): is his testimony accepted if he has repented with a repentance that the Muslims recognize as sincere?

I replied: "No." He said: It was as if he dismissed that because of my youth. So he said to Ghaylan, who was beside Makhul: "O Ghaylan, what do you say?" and he asked him about that. Ghaylan replied: "His testimony is accepted." He said: 'Abd al-Rahman? I said to Makhul: "O Abu 'Abd Allah, do you not hear what Ghaylan is saying?" Makhul replied: "His testimony is not accepted." Ghaylan then said: "Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, said: 'Except for those who repent after that.'" Makhul said: "Woe to you, O Ghaylan! I do not see that you will die except as one who is seduced (maftunan)." He said: "Allah said: 'And do not accept their testimony ever.'" Ibn Jabir said: "This Ghaylan is the one whom Hisham crucified."

14172 - Abu Zur'ah narrated to us, Yahya ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Ibn Lahi'ah narrated to me, 'Ata' ibn Dinar narrated to me, from Sa'id ibn Jubayr, regarding the saying of Allah: "Those are the disobedient (al-fasiqun)," meaning: those are the ones who disobeyed regarding what they said of falsehood. Similar was narrated from 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Zayd ibn Aslam.

His saying: "Except for those who repent."

14173 - Salih ibn Bashir ibn Salamah al-Tabarani narrated to us in Tabariya, Kathir ibn Hisham narrated to us, from Ja'far ibn Burqan, he said: I asked Maymun ibn Mihran and said: "Allah mentioned those who accuse chaste women, up to His saying: 'And those are the disobedient. Except for those who repent after that and make amends, then Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.' So He set a repentance in this verse, and the Exalted said: 'Indeed, those who accuse chaste, unaware, believing women are cursed in this world and the Hereafter, and they will have a great punishment.'" Maymun said: "As for the first, it is possible that you may have committed it, and as for the second, it is one that you will never commit anything of that."

14174 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Dawud, from al-Sha'bi, he said: "If the accuser calls himself a liar, his testimony is accepted; otherwise, he is a 'khali' (a person whose testimony is void), possessing no testimony, due to the saying of Allah: 'And those are the disobedient, except for those who repent.'"

14175 - Abu Sa'id al-Ashaj narrated to us, 'Abdah narrated to us, from 'Abd al-Malik, from 'Ata', regarding the person who has been punished for accusation and theft: "Is his testimony permissible?" He said: "Allah accepts it, but I do not accept it."
