14185 - I read to Muhammad ibn al-Fadl ibn Musa, Muhammad ibn 'Ali ibn al-Hasan narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Muzahim narrated to us, Bukayr ibn Ma'ruf narrated to us, from Muqatil ibn Hayyan, [regarding] His saying: "And the fifth [oath] is that the curse of Allah be upon him if he were of the liars." 'Asim ibn 'Adi was afflicted with this on the following Friday, as it descended upon his household. His cousin, his father's brother's son, came to him, for he was married to his cousin, his father's brother's daughter, and he accused her of [adultery with] his cousin. The husband, the wife, and the lover were all cousins of 'Asim, the brother of his father. Her husband, Hilal ibn Umayyah from Banu Waqif, said to 'Asim: "O son of my uncle, I swear by Allah that I saw Sharik ibn Samha' upon her, and she is pregnant, and I have not approached her for four months." 'Asim said: "To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return. This, by Allah, was my question regarding this matter among the people, and now I have been afflicted by it." He then went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I was nearly afflicted by my [very own] question; this verse has been revealed regarding those who accuse their wives." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "What is that, O 'Asim?" He said: "My cousin, the son of my father's brother, came to me; he is married to my cousin, the daughter of my father's brother, and he claims that he found my cousin, the son of my father's brother, upon her." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent for the husband, the lover, and the wife, and they gathered before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her husband, Hilal ibn Umayyah: "Woe to you! What are you saying about your cousin [and] your wife? You are accusing her with a falsehood." The husband said: "I swear to you, O Messenger of Allah, that I saw him with her upon her, and she is pregnant, and I have not approached her for four months." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the wife: "Woe to you! What does your husband say?" She said: "I swear by Allah that he is a liar, and he did not see anything of me that would make him suspicious. However, he is jealous. He has seen me with him in the house, and he is his cousin, and it was not considered strange for him to enter upon us, to spend the evening with us, and [stay] until the day, until most of the night had passed, and he would eat from our food; he never forbade anything of that ever. And he never forbade me from him until he accused me of adultery." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the lover: "Woe to you! What does your cousin say?" He said: "I swear he did not see what he says, and he is one of the liars. He did not see any suspicion or indecency from me. I used to enter his house by night and day, and neither of them ever forbade me from that ever. Nor did I see that upon his face, and I am a single man and have nothing. I used to enter the houses of my cousins and have lunch and dinner with them, and I intended no harm." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to the wife and the husband: "Stand and swear by Allah while standing by the pulpit after the Afternoon (al-'Asr) prayer." Her husband, Hilal ibn Umayyah, swore and said: "I bear witness by Allah that such-and-such [woman] is an adulteress, and that I am of the truthful." Then he said: "I bear witness by Allah that such-and-such [woman] is an adulteress, and that I saw Sharik upon
