And I was a young girl of few years, so they dispatched the camel and moved on. I found my necklace after the army had already moved on. I came to their encampment, and there was no one there to call or answer. I headed toward my station where I had been, thinking that they would notice my absence and return for me. While I was sitting in my place, my eyes became heavy and I fell asleep. Safwan ibn al-Mu'attal al-Sulami was behind the army; he had traveled through the night and reached my station in the morning. He saw the silhouette of a sleeping human, so he came to me. He recognized me when he saw me, as he had seen me before the hijab (veil). I awoke to his saying 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' (Indeed, we belong to Allah and to Him we shall return) when he recognized me. I covered my face with my jilbab (outer garment). By Allah, we did not speak a word, and I did not hear a word from him other than his 'istirja'' (saying 'Inna lillahi...') when he made his camel kneel. I stepped onto its hand and rode it. He began leading the camel with me until we came to the army after they had descended in the heat of midday. So those who perished perished, and the one who took charge of the great part of the lie was 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. We arrived in Medina, and I fell ill for a month upon my arrival, while the people were spreading the speech of the people of the lie. I was not aware of anything of that, and it disturbed me regarding my condition that I did not recognize from the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) the kindness I used to see from him when I was ill. He would only enter upon the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) and greet, then say: 'How is she?' then turn away. That is what disturbed me. I was not aware of the evil, until I went out after I had recovered. Umm Mistah went out with me toward al-Manasi', which was our place for relieving ourselves, and we would not go out except from night to night. That was before we had built latrines near our houses. Our affair was the affair of the early Arabs in relieving ourselves toward the open ground; we were bothered by having latrines built near our houses. So Umm Mistah—who is the daughter of Abi Ruhm ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib ibn 'Abd Manaf, whose mother is Umm Duha bint 'Amir, the maternal aunt of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, and her son is Mistah ibn Uthatha ibn 'Abbad ibn al-Muttalib—and I went out. I and the daughter of Abi Ruhm came toward my house when we had finished our business. Umm Mistah stumbled in her garment and said: 'Woe to Mistah.' I said to her: 'What a bad thing you have said! Do you curse a man who has witnessed Badr?' She said: 'O you simple one, have you not heard what he said?' I said: 'And what did he say?' She told me the speech of the people of the lie. She said: 'So I increased in illness upon my illness. When I returned to my house, the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) entered upon me, greeted, and then said: "How is she?" I said to him: "Do you give me permission to go to my parents?"' She said: 'And I was at that time wanting to verify the news from them.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) gave me permission, so I came to my parents and said to my mother: "O mother, what are the people talking about?" She said: "Take it easy on yourself, for by Allah, there was never a woman..."
