beautiful at a man who loves her, and she has co-wives, except that they increase their talk about her.' She said: 'I said, "Glory be to Allah! Have the people really spoken about this?"' She said: 'So I wept that night until morning; my tears would not dry, nor would I find any sleep.' She said: 'Then I woke up weeping. The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called 'Ali ibn Abi Talib and Usama ibn Zayd when the revelation was delayed, to consult them regarding the separation from his wife.' She said: 'As for Usama, he pointed out to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) what he knew of his family's innocence and what he felt in his heart of love for them. He said, "O Messenger of Allah, your family, and we know nothing but good."' She said: 'As for 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, he said, "Allah has not made things difficult for you, and there are many other women besides her. If you ask the servant girl, she will tell you the truth."' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) called Barira and said to her, "O Barira, have you seen anything that makes you suspicious?" Barira said to him, "No, by the One who sent you with the truth. I have never seen anything on her that I would hold against her, other than that she is a young girl who falls asleep and leaves the family's dough, and the tame animal comes and eats it."' The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) stood up one day and sought excuse from 'Abd Allah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul. She said: 'He said while on the pulpit, "O community of Muslims, who will help me against a man whose harm has reached my family? By Allah, I have known nothing of my family but good, and they have mentioned a man of whom I have known nothing but good, and he would not enter upon my family except with me."' She said: 'Then Sa'd ibn Mu'adh al-Ansari stood up and said, "O Messenger of Allah, I will excuse you from him. If he is from the Aws, I will strike his neck, and if he is from our brothers the Khazraj, command us and we will carry out your order."' She said: 'Then Sa'd ibn 'Ubada, who was the leader of the Khazraj and who had been a righteous man before that, but whose zeal was stirred, stood up. He said to Sa'd ibn Mu'adh, "You lied, by the life of Allah. By Allah, you will not kill him, and you are not able to kill him." Then Usayd ibn al-Hudayr, the cousin of Sa'd, stood up and said to Sa'd ibn 'Ubada, "You lied, by my life. We will certainly kill him, for you are a hypocrite arguing for the hypocrites."' She said: 'Then the two tribes, the Aws and the Khazraj, began to dispute until they were on the verge of fighting, while the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) was standing on the pulpit.' She said: 'The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) kept quieting them down until they fell silent and he fell silent.' She said: 'I wept that day, my tears would not dry, nor would I find any sleep. Then I wept the following night until morning; my tears would not dry, nor would I find any sleep.' She said: 'Then my parents woke up at my side, and I had been weeping for two nights and a day, neither finding sleep nor having my tears dry, and they thought that the weeping would rend my liver. While they were sitting with me, and I was weeping, a woman from the Ansar asked permission to see me, so I gave her permission, and she sat weeping with me.' She said: 'While we were in that state...'
