Ibn 'Abbas said: There was between Solomon and the Queen of Sheba and those with her—when he looked at the dust—as much as the distance between us and al-Hirah. 'Ata' said: Mujahid was then among the Azd. Solomon said: "Which of you will bring me her throne?" He said: Between her throne and Solomon, when he looked at the dust, was a journey of two months. An 'ifrit from the jinn said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your station." He said: Solomon had a seat where he would sit for the people as princes sit, then he would stand up. He said: "I will bring it to you before you rise from your station." Solomon said: "I desire something faster than that." Then the one who had knowledge of the Scripture said: "I will look into the book of my Lord, then I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you." He said: Then her throne appeared from beneath Solomon's foot, from beneath a chair upon which he would place his foot before ascending the throne. He said: When Solomon saw her throne, he said: "This is from the favor of my Lord." He said: "Disguise her throne for her." When she arrived, it was said to her: "Is your throne like this?" She said: "It is as though it were it." He said: Then when she came to him, she asked him about two things. She said to Solomon: "What is water that is of foam, clear, not from the earth and not from the sky?" Solomon would, when asked about something, inquire about it from the humans, then ask the jinn, then ask the devils. He said: The devils said: "This is simple; run the horses, then take their sweat and fill vessels with it." He said: He ordered the horses to be run, then prepared their sweat, and filled vessels with it. He said: She asked about the color of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
He said: Solomon sprang from his throne and fell prostrate, saying: "O Lord, she has asked me about a matter that it is difficult in my heart to even mention to You." He said: "Return, for you have been sufficed." He said: So he returned to his throne and said: "What did you ask about?" She said: "I did not ask you except about the water." He said to his troops: "What did she ask about?" They said: "She did not ask you except about the water." He said: And they all forgot it. He said: The devils said: "Solomon wishes to take her for himself, and if he takes her for himself, then a child is born between them, we will not be freed from servitude." He said: So they made a palace paved with glass containing fish. He said: It was said to her: "Enter the palace." When she saw it, she thought it was a pool and uncovered her shins, and behold, she was hairy. Solomon said: "This is ugly; what will remove it?" They said: "Razors will remove it." Their prophet said: "The mark of razors is ugly." He said: So the devils created hair-removing paste (al-nawrah). He said: It is the first thing that was created as hair-removing paste. He said: So he read from [the beginning] up to "He inspected the birds," until he finished at "Go back to them, for we will surely come to them with soldiers against whom they have no defense." Abu Bakr said: How excellent is this hadith!

بن عَبَّاسٍ قَالَ: وَكَانَ بين سليمان وبَيْنَ مَلِكَةِ سَبَأٍ وَمَنْ مَعَهَا حَتَّى نَظَرَ إِلَى الْغُبَارِ كَمَا بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ الْحِيرَةِ، قَالَ: عَطَاءٌ: وَمُجَاهِدٌ حِينَئِذٍ فِي الأَزْدِ. فَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ أَيُّكُمْ يَأْتِينِي بِعَرْشِهَا قَالَ: بَيْنَ عَرْشِهَا وَبَيْنَ سُلَيْمَانَ حِينَ نَظَرَ إِلَى الْغُبَارِ مَسِيرَةُ شَهْرَيْنِ قَالَ عِفْرِيتٌ مِنَ الْجِنِّ أَنَا آتِيكَ بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقُومَ مِنْ مَقَامِكَ قَالَ: وَكَانَ لِسُلَيْمَانَ مَجْلِسٌ يَجْلِسُ فِيهِ لِلنَّاسِ كَمَا تَجْلِسُ الأُمَرَاءُ ثُمَّ يَقُومُ، فَقَالَ: أَنَا آتِيكَ بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقُومَ مِنْ مَقَامِكَ قَالَ: سُلَيْمَانُ: أُرِيدُ أَعْجَلَ مِنْ ذَلِكَ: فَقَالَ الَّذِي عِنْدَهُ عِلْمٌ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ أَنَا أَنْظُرُ فِي كِتَابِ رَبِّي، ثُمَّ آتِيكَ به قبل أن يرتد إليك طرفك قَالَ: فَنَبَعَ عَرْشُهَا مِنْ تَحْتِ قَدَمِ سُلَيْمَانَ، مِنْ تَحْتِ كُرْسِيٍّ كَانَ يَضَعُ عَلَيْهِ رِجْلَهُ ثُمَّ يَصْعَدُ إِلَى السَّرِيرِ، قَالَ:
فَلَمَّا رَأَى سُلَيْمَانُ عَرْشَهَا قَالَ هَذَا مِنْ فَضْلِ رَبِّي قَالَ نَكِّرُوا لَهَا عَرْشَهَا فَلَمَّا جَاءَتْ قِيلَ لها أَهَكَذَا عَرْشُكِ قَالَتْ: كَأَنَّهُ هُوَ قَالَ: فَسَأَلَتْهُ حِينَ جَاءَتْهُ، عَنْ أَمْرَيْنِ، قَالَتْ لسليمان، ماماء مِنْ زَبَدٍ رُوَاءٍ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَرْضٍ وَلا سَمَاءٍ؟ وَكَانَ سُلَيْمَانُ إِذَا سُئِلَ، عَنْ شَيْءٍ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ الإِنْسَ، ثُمَّ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ الْجِنَّ، ثُمَّ سَأَلَ عَنْهُ الشَّيَاطِينَ قَالَ: فَقَالَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ: هَذَا هَيِّنٌ أَجْرِ الْخَيْلَ، ثُمَّ خُذْ عَرَقَهَا ثم املأ منه الآنية. قال: وأمر بِالْخَيْلِ فَأُجْرِيَتْ، ثُمَّ أَعَدَّ عَرَقَهَا، فَمَلأَ مِنْهُ الآنِيَةَ. قَالَ: سَأَلَتْ، عَنْ لَوْنِ اللَّهِ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ.
قَالَ: فَوَثَبَ سُلَيْمَانُ، عَنْ سَرِيرٍ، فَخَرَّ سَاجِدًا، فَقَالَ: يَا رَبِّ لَقَدْ سَأَلَتْنِي، عَنْ أَمْرٍ إِنَّهُ لَيَتَكَايَدُ فِي قَلْبِي أَنْ أَذْكُرَهُ لَكَ. قَالَ: ارْجِعْ فَقَدْ كَفَيْتُكُمْ، قَالَ: فَرَجَعَ إِلَى سَرِيرِهِ فَقَالَ: مَا سَأَلْتِ عَنْهُ؟ فَقَالَتْ: مَا سَأَلْتُكَ إِلا، عَنِ الْمَاءِ قَالَ: لِجُنُودِهِ مَا سَأَلَتْ عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا مَا سَأَلَتْكَ إِلا عَنِ الْمَاءِ. قَالَ: وَنُسُّوهُ كُلُّهُمْ قَالَ: فَقَالَتِ الشياطين عَنْهُ فَقَالُوا مَا سَأَلَتْكَ إِلا، عَنِ الْمَاءِ. قَالَ: وَنُسُّوهُ كُلُّهُمْ قَالَ: فَقَالَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ: لَسُلَيْمَانُ يُرِيدُ أَنَ يَتَّخِذَهَا لِنَفْسِهِ، فَإِنِ اتَّخَذَهَا لِنَفْسِهِ ثُمَّ وُلِدَ بَيْنَهُمَا وَلَدٌ لَمْ نَنْفَكَّ مِنْ عُبُودِيَّةٍ، قَالَ: فَجَعَلُوا صَرْحًا مُمَرَّدًا مِنْ قَوَارِيرَ فيه السمك، قال: يل لَهَا ادْخُلِي الصَّرْحَ فَلَمَّا رَأَتْهُ حَسِبَتْهُ لُجَّةً وَكَشَفَتْ، عَنْ سَاقَيْهَا فَإِذَا هِيَ شَعْرَاءُ فَقَالَ سُلَيْمَانُ، هَذَا قَبِيحٌ مَا يُذْهِبُهُ فَقَالُوا:
يُذْهِبُهُ الْمَوَاسِي. فَقَالَ نَبِيُّهُمْ أَثَرُ الْمَوَاسِي قَبِيحٌ. قَالَ: فَجَعَلَتِ الشَّيَاطِينُ النَّوْرَةَ قَالَ:
فَهُوَ أَوَّلُ مَا جُعِلَتِ النَّوْرَةُ لَهُ قَالَ: فَقَرَأَ مَا بَيْنَ وَتَفَقَّدَ الطَّيْرَ حَتَّى انْتَهَى ارْجِعْ إِلَيْهِمْ فَلَنَأْتِيَنَّهُمْ بِجُنُودٍ لَا قِبَلَ لَهُمْ بِهَا قَالَ: أَبُو بَكْرٍ: مَا أَحْسَنَهُ مِنْ حَدِيثٍ «١» .
